In pursuit of achieving our mission to prepare a diverse and inclusive student body to succeed in high-fulfillment technical careers, the Turing School of Software & Design is creating a new technical instruction role outside our typical academic teams. As we work to broaden our student pool, there are increasing opportunities to conduct training classes in libraries, workforce centers, military bases, and other community spaces. These courses help potential students demystify computer programming and see themselves on a path to career success.

Turing is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering intensive instructional programs for adults working to become professional software developers. We believe that potential is widely distributed but opportunity is not. This role is key to proving that the analytical skills of a nurse, the management skills of a teacher, or the customer understanding of a bartender are all great preparation for being a software developer. This role, similarly, demands a broad skill set with the ability to plan and execute high-quality technical instruction, self-organization and logistical problem solving to run events in multiple locations, and, most importantly, the patience to answer dozens of anxious questions from budding programmers.

Expected Responsibilities

While the role will grow and change over time, we expect the Technical Programs Instructor to comprehensively execute and plan various recruitment opportunities, including but not limited to:

  • Try Coding Workshops: Deliver Try Coding instruction in a way that is both engaging and effective in one or two-day workshops. Teach Try Coding workshops on site at Turing, travel occasionally around the Denver Metro Area, greater Colorado, and out-of-state for off-site events. Curriculum Design: Edit and improve instructional materials that are aligned with the learning goals of the Try Coding curriculum. Build new curriculum for new coding workshops and recruitment events.
  • Program Management: Coordinate various elements to ensure seamless, efficient and impactful workshops, including student and alumni panelists to speak during each Try Coding event. Train, schedule, and support teaching assistants to for Try Coding events.
  • Lead Generation: Build strong, supportive relationships with prospective students in various stages in our student recruitment funnel to increase the matriculation rate amongst interested and admitted applicants. Execute sales-like and outreach tactics including calling, emailing and texting to increase enrollment conversions.
  • Strategic Planning: Work closely with the Recruitment, Admissions and Enrollment team and 1:1 with the Student Recruitment Manager to design, test, measure and revamp recruitment opportunities specific to coding awareness and initial practice.
  • Turing Ambassador: Represent Turing to targeted student recruitment constituencies by understanding and representing the mission, approach, and ethos of the organization.
  • Admissions Support: Support prospective students for both technical skill and cultural alignment, coordinate with the team on admissions decisions, and support Mod 0 and other pre-arrival academic programming.
