We believe in the everyday hero. Those who have the courage to follow their passion and who have the strength and determination to realize their dreams. Small business owners are at the heart of all we do, so we're creating powerful, easy-to-use financial solutions to help them run their business.

Every week small business owners across the world interact with millions of consumers using SumUp. Our team builds products that make these interactions easier, more engaging and more meaningful. In short, we turn payment transactions into relationships.

As an Android Engineer, you will work alongside a cross-functional team and will be involved in developing and maintaining our first consumer products. We are looking for engineers that are eager to get involved in product decisions and design and build scalable, consumer-facing products. If you feel like one of these people then join our consumer mission as a (Senior) Android Engineer.

While we have offices in many European cities, this position is remote-friendly (European time zone). We are open to candidates who are looking for part or full time employment.

What you’ll do in this role

  • You'll shape the core experience of consumers who use the Android App for their interaction with merchants.
  • You’ll help build the consumer products for SumUp and contribute to this exciting new B2C direction for us.
  • In the first few weeks, you'll dive into the code and learn how to create clean, composable components in our codebase. You'll use this knowledge to start developing and refining features. You'll learn how we write tests, how we manage bluetooth communication, and how we keep performance tip-top.
  • In the first three months, you'll develop major features that impact our consumer base. You'll work closely with the product and design team to build features that are maintainable, usable, and beautiful. You'll help us re-think problems we've solved before in a different way as requirements evolve.
  • By the end of your first year, you'll have a wealth of knowledge about our complex problem domain, as well as its implications in the interface and in the backend – and how to manage it in a clean way. You'll have launched numerous features in our Android Apps.

You will fit in perfectly to our team if:

  • You're experienced with Kotlin and the Android framework (knowledge of command line is a plus).
  • You strive for clean code and know what to test, why to test it, and how to write flexible tests that won't break.
  • You care about user interaction, usability and making the interface beautiful.
  • You are interested in continuous learning and working with new tech such as, Jetpack Compose, Navigation Components, Firebase libraries, Kotlin Coroutines and Flows and many many more…
  • You thrive in a cross-functional and collaborative environment in which we empower each other to grow.

Why you should join SumUp

  • We’re a truly global team of 3000+ people from 80 nationalities, spread across 22 offices around the world.
  • You'll have the opportunity to make an impact as we work in small and empowered cross-functional teams organized in flat hierarchies.
  • We work in small batches with lightweight change approvals and continuous delivery. You’ll see the impact of what you build quickly.
  • We support you in your continuous learning with internal talks, courses and knowledge-sharing sessions, as well as a generous budget for attending conferences and external training.
  • We invest heavily in our engineering culture: Expect transparency and candid feedback, high cooperation, blameless retros and postmortems, as well as a people-positive organization that encourages knowledge-sharing and constant innovation from within.
  • Hack Days: Every second Friday you’ll get the entire day to learn, explore and experiment, or work on side-projects.
  • You'll be able to attend global offsites and regular team events.
  • You decide how you work best: From our offices in Berlin/Cologne, from home, or a mix of both. Any location where we have a legal entity.
  • Purpose: You’ll work on meaningful projects that empower millions of small-business owners and consumers around the world.
  • We offer a corporate pension scheme, 28 days’ paid leave, free German and yoga classes, subsidised Urban Sports Club membership and other great benefits.
