Not Another Pristine Post About Culture

Brought to You By The Hubble Culture Captain: Russell Johnston

As a company that produces financial performance management software, many assume we are boring business people schlepping away at work in our pleated khakis. You might be surprised to know that one of my coworkers used to work for the circus.  Another performed at Carnegie Hall as a classical guitarist.  And still another spent some time as a drag queen. This may sound like the beginning of a joke where people are walking into a bar, but it’s actually just a handful of background stories from my work family.  And there are more where those came from.

Here at Hubble, we aren’t really into meeting any outside expectations when it comes to our culture. Shaking up the status quo and doing things differently is not only what we are known for but an innate part of who we are-an interesting company. A company where our differences actually bring us together.

Celebrating Difference is Our Biggest Advantage

It’s no shock, really, that culture is at the core of our business.  After all, it was the Merriam-Webster’s 2014 Word of the Year.  But more than just being a popular search, it’s a commitment to own the competencies that impact everyone in the business.  We understand that if you are going to spend nearly 1/3 of your life working, you should at least be able to enjoy it.

Finding Our Flow in a World of Button-downs

This understanding of balance led us to define the self-created “Hubble Gene”, and it was no small task.  After taking a careful look at the key players in our business, we uncovered what each of them had in common, regardless of background or position.  What we found was that each person shared 5 key attributes that led to their success.  These qualities became our Core Competencies, and now serve as the foundation for our hiring and evaluation processes.

And like Cher’s costume designer, we are always adapting and innovating, because we know staying flexible can bring great things. Especially when it comes to our work. Sometimes we are workaholics and intense.  Other times we are wild and curse more than we should (clearly part of our British influence).  But at the end of the day, our goal isn’t to fool anyone with a fully stocked bar or pimped out ping pong table. We’re really just trying to keep it real and build a better product.

Hubble’s Latest Debut

To further our point, we recently created some videos in collaboration with Lumenati.  While their primary function is to poke fun at the train wreck that can occur from disjointed systems and stale data, they also give you a clear view of how we see ourselves.  These videos allow our current and future customers to know us as we really are.  And whether our individual backgrounds appear to communicate a common language, with Hubble at the core, we know getting our culture right seems to take care of everything else.
