Apostrophe is building the health plan that can fix America.

The largest, most innovative self-insured employers have figured out how to cut their healthcare costs by 20%-40% while delivering better benefits to their employees. Apostrophe’s Intelligent Health Benefits Platform makes their best practices plug-and-play for the other 80% of US employers who self-insure their health benefits.

We are backed by top tier investors including Blue Cross Blue Shield and Norwest Venture Partners. Our revenue is growing at 250% year-over-year and we are on track for profitability in the next 24 months.

We are looking for an Engineering leader who can build and lead a team capable of delivering the technology to support hundreds of thousands of subscribers and hundreds of millions in revenue. In this role, you will report to the CEO and be a key collaborative member of the executive team.

This is a unique opportunity to join a fast-growing Series A company but have the impact of an early team member in terms of shaping both our technology direction and the culture of the technical team.

Who you are

The ideal candidate is eager to recruit and mentor a team of passionate software engineers but can also roll up their sleeves to get into the details. You are a seasoned software leader with demonstrated experience in defining and implementing practical and effective solutions for complex problems. You are deeply aligned with the needs of the business, operate without an ego, and thrive in an environment built focused on simplicity, transparency and consistent kickass execution.

What You’ll Do

Team

  • Hire, inspire, coach, and provide technical guidance to the engineering team. Current budget has the team growing by more than 15+ FTE over the first 12 months of your tenure.
  • Empower your team to make the biggest impact possible for the company while reaching their individual professional development goals.
  • Manage a Denver-based outsourced development team augmenting our own in-house development team through 2020.
  • Own staffing, budget, and resource allocation for your part of the organization.

Business

  • Work closely with the product and operations teams to translate business needs into technical specifications and requirements for our platform, our applications, and our internal tools.
  • Develop a culture where folks are energized by understanding the business so they can better deliver solutions that meet the needs of the business.
  • Evaluate build-buy-partner decisions to accelerate our ability to deliver value.
  • Provide visibility and predictability on development schedules and deliverables to the organization and to investors.
  • Collaborate on strategy, resource allocation, and tradeoffs at the executive team level.

Technology

We are building on a HIPAA-compliant AWS stack utilizing Node.js, React, Angular, MySQL, Jenkins, and Github. We are currently migrating from a database-centric architecture to a microservices model.

  • Balance new feature development with modifications to existing functionality to more adequately address business needs and/or migrate them to our go-forward architecture.
  • Implement best practices for performance, reliability, scalability, security, reusability, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead your team to develop and maintain cutting edge applications and systems through strong documentation and testing practices.
  • Own integrations with 3rd party partners that contribute key business functions to our stack such as claims adjudication, payment processing, and analytics.
  • Build a technical operations capability to nimbly address ad hoc technical support needs as well as launch and maintain 3rd party integrations with customer-specific systems for eligibility, pharmacy benefits, and analytics.
  • Identify new technologies, tools and data sources that can support product needs. Continuously evolve systems, processes, product, and infrastructure as we grow.

Preferred Experience

  • 10+ years of software development with a progression of leadership experience including at the VP or executive team level depending on the size of company.
  • Successful scaling of an engineering team through rapid growth, preferably at an early-stage high growth organization.
  • Experience with software and data architecture and building SaaS technology to scale. Bonus points for previously shepherding a platform migration.
  • Healthcare, and specifically healthcare claims experience, would be a huge accelerator in your ability to guide the team, but it is not required.
  • A strong entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for developing diverse and inclusive top-performing engineering teams is a must.
