The Role

You'll be the key to creating reliable, safety-critical embedded software that controls our autonomous vehicle hardware - brakes, steering, actuation, and other functions. Given your background developing embedded software for commercially-deployed mobile robotics applications, you'll have a major, positive impact on the performance, reliability, and safety of the Outrider System!

The Software Engineer - Embedded Software Sustainment will be responsible for contributing to all applications of embedded software in Outrider's products, including vehicle controls, actuation, and navigation; signal processing; and communications.

The role requires exceptional software engineering skills – you will be responsible for helping build and support autonomous vehicle systems that redefine large enterprise supply chains and boast safe, error-free, and effective operational performance.

Embedded software engineering is a pivotal function for delivering a safety-critical system for industrial automation. The opportunity offers a technical, hands-on, software engineer the chance to refine and solidify a market-defining, enterprise-grade robotics product that combines autonomous vehicle technologies with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model.

This position is ideal for someone who wants to be a part of an elite, impactful development unit pushing confined-area, heavy-vehicle autonomy into the mainstream. We're a team of builders and sustainers that's passionate about start-to-finish, production-oriented development and rapidly introducing our software to the real world of logistics.

The ideal candidate embraces the idea of reducing the carbon footprint of our 'get-it-now' economy and is invigorated by our overarching mission to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission, self-driving vehicle technology.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Triage and perform root-cause failure analysis through understanding of system usage, end-user observation reporting, and system log file information
  • Coordinate across teams, including hardware, software, system safety, and test to build on system behavior and performance, as well as rapidly iterate features to meet desired targets, metrics, and KPIs
  • Support product deployment, system maintenance, and the software development life cycle for deployed systems to customer sites or system validation
  • Identify opportunities to improve deployed systems; work with software teams to understand data, performance, and potential improvements
  • Travel and perform fieldwork, depending on customer locations (up to 25%)
  • Develop test cases to verify/validate software requirements at different levels of the development lifecycle by using existing test framework/scripts or developing new ones
  • Execute test cases including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) integration testing on various embedded systems and components
  • Support continuous integration/continuous development (CI/CD)
  • Contribute generally to the growth and success of the Company and the building of a vibrant culture focused on the responsible deployment of zero-emission autonomous vehicle technology

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • Demonstrated C development experience focused on embedded applications
  • Background in embedded software development (ideally for marine, ground, air, or space vehicles, autonomous or otherwise)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional analytical skills
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and people skills

Ideal qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • Experience developing and testing software for safety-critical applications
  • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS)
  • Familiarity with functional safety specifications, including ISO 26262 and IEC 61508
  • A pedigree in robotics and/or autonomous vehicle systems
  • Familiarity with C++, Python, and ROS
  • Experience with the CAN bus standard, Ethernet and UDP
