Senior System Software Engineer
Our Mission at Scythe
Humanity has lost touch with nature - we’ve traded dirt and trees for asphalt, and we rely on loud, polluting, gas-powered machines to care for our limited natural spaces.
Scythe is forging a new future by building intelligent, all-electric machines that unlock a new superpower: the ability to care for the outdoors pollution-free at enormous scale. From today’s first steps in landscape maintenance to full-fledged re-terraforming in the future, Scythe is pioneering autonomous machinery that supports the ingenuity of humans, multiplying our power to nurture our planet.
At Scythe, you’ll work with a team of world-class experts in everything from computer vision to mechanical engineering, pushing the limits of possibility and growing by overcoming hurdles along the way.
The world needs what we’re building—come join us in making it a reality.
Building Robot Systems Software at Scythe
Scythe is looking to add an experienced, broadly-skilled software engineer to develop our state-of-the-art, fully-autonomous robot's software stack. As a Senior System Software Engineer at Scythe, you'd be able to work across our whole stack to help build the off-road, outdoor autonomy system of the future. We're searching for a new teammate who is comfortable working across programming paradigms, such as Python, Rust or C, and developing up-and-down the stack, from CAN bus drivers to GraphQL endpoints. If you enjoy programming challenges of all kinds and know how to make code really fly, we'd love to talk.
You’ll work in concert with teammates from across the company to build a rich understanding of product needs and bring those ideas to life. We expect you to be broadly experienced to be able to “see around corners”, to thrive in a fast-paced, self-managed engineering environment, and to be a collaborative, low-ego teammate who helps Scythe realize its big mission.
What you’ll do at Scythe
- Write a lot of software and deploy it to both our robots and the cloud, primarily in Rust but also in Python, C++, and other languages & frameworks as necessary.
- Develop software to control and monitor a wide variety of hardware components from motors to cameras
- Interface with custom electronics boards over serial and CAN and work with electrical and firmware engineers to troubleshoot
- Automate builds, continuous integration pipelines, and software deployment processes across our software systems
- Develop the software systems and architecture that runs on our robots to enable rapid development of high-level perception and control software
What you know well
- Developed software components such as libraries, frameworks, and network services from scratch in statically compiled languages, such as C, C++, D, Rust, or Zig
- Debugging the behavior of complex systems
- Performance analysis and optimization of compiled code
- Linux, the command-line, and scripting
- Software concurrency and parallelism
What you've maybe done
- Linux Package management, shared libraries, and containerization technologies (e.g. Docker)
- Familiar with CMake, Bazel, Pants, Scons or other open source build tools
- Developed networking software building on concepts and protocols including Ethernet, IPv4, TCP, UDP, etc.
- Embedded software and low-level communication protocol (e.g. CAN) development
- Robot or IoT software development, particularly for complex multi-sensor, realtime applications
- Worked with message-passing middleware frameworks, such as ROS, ZeroMQ, LCM, YARP
- CUDA, OpenGL, OpenCL, Metal or other GPGPU programming
- Used Balena (formerly Resin.io) or other managed services to deploy software across fleets of machines
