The role

The Manager of Software/System Test Engineering will report to the VP of Systems Engineering and will be responsible for building, managing, and leading a function and organization focused primarily on: a) comprehensive design verification and validation; b) use-case test procedure creation; and c) bug identification, logging and resolution of the hardware, software, and systems that fully automate distribution yards.

 

This position is mission-critical for delivering a safe, effective, first-of-its-kind industrial technology, and will build the foundation for the company’s overall system test procedures and organization. The successful candidate will build the team and the infrastructure to integrate, test, and validate autonomous vehicle systems that redefine large enterprise supply chains and boast safe, error-free, and effective operational performance.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Build, manage, and lead the Software and System Test team
  • Help refine system and sub-system requirements with a focus on testability
  • Generate, organize, manage, and oversee the execution of system and design verification tests to validate compliance with specifications before releasing hardware and software deliveries to customers
  • Partner closely with Systems Integration team to oversee development of hardware test harnesses and work with mechanical and electrical engineering personnel to implement them
  • Define and guide the development of software test harnesses and test tool infrastructure
  • Lead the test framework and test vision across the entire company
  • Run and expand the software simulation testing function to maximize coverage and depth of sim tests
  • Verify the attainment of system and subsystem performance metrics
  • Define what proper testing of this system means; partner with System Integration and Development teams to figure out how modules are designed and should be tested
  • Build and run the team and function focused on detailed analysis of vehicle operational/performance data
  • Design and execute the tests required for functional testing
  • Work with the Systems Integration team to understand and prioritize test exceptions and help drive toward a product that meets all customer, business, and technical expectations
  • Drive company toward requirements-driven development while adding immediate value during requirements definition and nimble product development processes - solve for incomplete requirements, help define requirements, ensure requirements are there
  • Undertake business travel as necessary to support product development and customer deployment
  • Contribute generally to the growth and success of Outrider and the building of a vibrant company culture focused on the responsible deployment of zero-emission, autonomous vehicle technology

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science and/or electrical/electronics engineering
  • C/C++ development experience
  • Background in test functions for safety-critical systems
  • Demonstrated experience working with a system of systems
  • Experience testing a complex software stack
  • Ability to work in a fluid environment without predefined processes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional analytical skills
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and people skills
  • Experience leading and growing software development and test teams

Ideal qualifications

  • Design, development, integration, testing, and/or QA experience with autonomous ground vehicles or tractor/trailer combinations ('18-wheelers')
  • Experience building and managing a group of 15-20 engineers
