    About This Role

     

    The Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer is a member of a scrum team that focuses on shipping quality, valuable software that meets requirements as efficiently and quickly as possible. As such, the QA Engineer is responsible for understanding the customer problem and the intended solution and translating that behavior into test cases. They are responsible for writing, maintaining, and updating test cases, leveraging automation whenever possible while ensuring the team incorporates automation into the technology roadmap to improve testing efficiency. During development, the QA Engineer's role is to proactively address potential bugs or negative tests that might not be considered and provide immediate feedback to the developers to ensure the product works as intended while limiting re-work. The QA Engineer also is involved in continuous improvement through self-education of testing and industry best practices as well as through team retrospectives and innovation sprints and contributes to the improvement of ongoing quality control. 

     

    We are seeking an individual who is a leader comfortable with uncertainty, change, and figuring things out. You will be working in a newly-created scrum team, working in context of existing scrum teams and products. We need someone who can assert themselves confidently, is not afraid of deadlines, and is willing to point out and implement improvements or fill gaps. Everyone on our team is an individual contributor, so be ready to roll up your sleeves and get things done.

     

    Ideally, you will have some background in digital media, as we are a media company with many local news properties across the country. Be ready to talk about what news websites you read and what you know about the changing media landscape.

     

    Essential functions

    • Comfortable working with and configuring QA frameworks and tools like Selenium.

    • Effective and proficient using them with little guidance.

    • Consideration for NFRs and performance testing. 

    • Developing domain / product expertise.

    • Proficient in agile software development practices and participates in all ceremonies on the agile team, and communicates risk and blockers, as well as flag when help is needed.

    • Participates in prioritization which influences the product context and backlog to ensure incorporation in the test plan.

    • Occasional stakeholder interaction when discussing solutions or gaining understanding of the customer problem.

    • Contribute to demos of new functionality to stakeholders.

    • Remove barriers and blockers in a self-directed way.

    • Ability to navigate conflict, relationships, and team dynamics within the agile team.

     

    Skills/Experience

    • 2+ years writing HTML, CSS and JavaScript

    • Can read and write common data formats like JSON, XML, etc

    • 2+ years automated web application testing with tools like Selenium

    • 2+ years web API testing with tools like Postman, SOAPUI

    • 2+ years of web performance testing tools like webpagetest.org
