  • UX Designer

Our products hold the shadows at bay, shielding businesses from calculated and malicious cyber attacks.  Our customers rely on us for detection, prevention and remediation of security risks. The user base we serve ranges from highly technical cybersecurity scientists to set-it-and-forget-it.  Gauntlet, tossed.

We’re looking for a product designer with a couple years of experience working on complex web-based applications.  An eternal student seeking to grow their knowledge, try out new methods and techniques, utilizing hard-earned interaction design chops to make users’ lives easier.

    Why You Matter

You are compelled to ask “why”.  You need to know your work has purpose.  You’re a designer who takes the time to understand customers, and can tell an engaging story to your teammates when sharing user discoveries. You collaborate with developers and designers alike, and recognize that good ideas come from everywhere.

You have an established sense of IA, IxD, and user-centered-design best practice.  You understand how information architecture fundamentally impacts a product’s success, and grasp how small details can add up to form the whole.  You are well-informed, strategic when advocating for the best experience, and eager to deliver it to the end user.

    Why Carbon Black?

At Carbon Black we believe in continuous learning and improvement.  We foster a blameless culture where trust is key. We work to bring out the best in one another.  We value the individual and strive to be great team players.

With us you’ll have the chance to make an impact in the ever-evolving cybersecurity field. You’ll join a group of designers, writers, and researchers, who share your passion for bringing great UX to the enterprise space.  You’ll be part of a cross-functional team with a product owner and developers who share the same focus; learning from our customers and using that knowledge to decide what problems to solve and how.

Our UX team members are Agile practitioners: we move fast, learn faster, collaborate enthusiastically and lay track on process as we go. We’ve got great support from product management and software engineering, as well as executive sponsorship. Our colleagues are smart, open, and ready to work with us on taking our users’ experience to the next level.

    What You’ll Do

    • Design discovery with product owner and scrum team - which includes tapping customers, stakeholders, and subject matter experts to participate in customer interviews, observation, and other forms of qualitative research help inform design direction.

    • Identify user pain points in the wild; innovate with your team to resolve them in the product.

    • Capture early designs with quick sketches, brainstorm to generate ideas.

    • Create and refine user scenarios and user stories in concert with product management.

    • Articulate designs with workflows and annotated wireframes.

    • Present design alternatives with confidence, and absorb feedback with grace.

    • Vet designs with scrum team and share concepts with UX teammates.

    • Use basic prototypes to validate design decisions through usability studies.

    • Collaborate with User Research, inform test plans, and iterate designs based on research findings.

    • Work with UX copywriters to arrive at and clarify language and terminology in the UI.

    • Apply business prioritization and make reasonable trade-offs in order to meet project objectives.

    What You’ll Bring

    • 2-5 years’ experience working on complex web applications (not web sites).

    • A collaborative yen to be around other designers and share ideas.

    • Your sense of humor (no really, it doesn’t go without saying!)

    • Proficiency in interaction design and information architecture.

    • Excellent eye for page balance and hierarchy of content, layout and visuals.

    • Capability in articulating design rationale and facilitating productive discussion.

    • The courage and tenacity to pursue the best experience for the end user.

    • Ability to break down goals and objectives into a reliable work plan.

    • Independent initiative within shared team goals.

    • Bonus points: experience designing in an Agile environment.

For serious consideration, please link to a portfolio or work samples.
What we’re interested in: your design process, techniques and methodologies; NOT merely polished or final visuals.  We love to see sketches, workflows, annotated wireframes, sitemaps, user journeys, task analysis, brainstorms and other artifacts of how you tackled the design challenge from start to finish.  It’s the journey that speaks to us, not just the finished product.
