We’re looking for an experienced Sr. Electrical Engineer to join the Sphero Engineering Team. In this role, you will be an integral part of the team tasked with the technical development of Sphero’s world class products.

True cradle to grave ownership of a product’s electrical design.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Support the electrical development of one or more complete new product designs.
  • Translate product requirements into electrical designs.
  • Understand and articulate technical risks and design margin throughout process.
  • Leverage analytical tools, including simulation and hand calculations, to select optimal architecture and verify that subsystems meet design intent.
  • Complete electrical layouts and detailed PCB design, creating and/or updating eCAD models.
  • Leverage rapid prototyping approaches in early design verification.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews
  • Generate appropriately annotated manufacturing drawings that assure desired system performance.
  • Develop component, system, and/or life testing requirements to verify designs.
  • Perform methodical root cause analysis and debugging using DOE for any non-compliance in system performance.
  • Test design and component debugging
  • Work with our Far East Operations team in supporting system qualification, prototype builds and other launch activities at contract manufacturers in China.
  • Initiate and process engineering change requests as needed to resolve deficiencies in released designs, reduce costs and/or improve performance.
  • Overseas travel to Asia is likely, two to three times per year.    

Desired Skills/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or bachelor’s in the sciences with equivalent work experience.
  • 3 years minimum experience in product development of Electrical systems
  • 2 years minimum experience with ECAD tools, preferably using Altium.
  • Design for manufacture (DFM)
  • Engineering calculations including analog circuits, complex impedances for RF matching networks, current and power consumption calculations for ultra low power devices.
  • Small mechanism design, especially motors, servos, sensors, batteries, etc.
  • Wireless communication systems engineering, including Wifi and Bluetooth
  • Design for ESD and EMC immunity, especially with respect to consumer certification and compliance standards
  • Radio, thermal, magnetic analysis experience.
  • Design mock-up and rapid prototyping methods - soldering and circuit assembly.
  • Experience with consumer product development and Asian manufacturing.
  • Revision control utilizing a central PDM system
