We spend most our time in AWS, and we’re looking for an energetic DevOps Engineer who has experience with Java or Python, lives in version control, enjoys working with configuration management like Puppet or Chef, and looks forward to solving problems with new Cloud tech.

What you will do:
  • Software release on a (currently) weekly basis
  • Deploy, debug and optimize dev, test and production clusters in AWS EC2 consisting of Linux, Apache, Tomcat and PostgreSQL
  • Work with the team to own and maintain the production infrastructure - patches, backups, upgrades, AMI’s, and security
  • Daily interaction with developers and participation in the development process
  • Continuously iterate and improve our systems
  • Create documentation for supported systems and services
  • Participate in on-call, and share in off-hours maintenance work
What will make you a great fit:
  • Strong history of professional growth, collaboration and excellent communication skills
  • Cloud experience, AWS preferred (EC2, S3, Glacier, ELB, EBS, RedShift, Lambda, etc) (1+ year)
  • Software release experience (1+ year)
  • Development experience with at least one of the following: Java, Python, Node.js (2+ years)
  • Familiarity with Jenkins CI
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Working in version control, especially with Git, is something you know and love
  • You enjoy a fast-paced, demanding DevOps environment that requires collaboration

The successful applicant will complete this exercise: Write a simple script or program to download the metric data from our Amazon S3 bucket, determine the following results from the data, and publish a simple report of the results to your own S3 bucket. You may use any language you want, although we prefer Python.

You script should:
  • Download the data from the following URL:
s3://craftsy-yak/metrics.json (https://s3.amazonaws.com/craftsy-yak/metrics.json)
  • Find all hosts where replication_lag > 200
  • Find all hosts where ingest_rate_ms < 100
  • Find all hosts where failed_sends > 20
  • Generates a simple report with the above results
  • Upload the report to your own Amazon S3 bucket
  • Make sure the file has public read access.
Other requirements:
  • Please run your script on an Amazon EC2 instance (t1.micro or t2.micro).
  • When you're finished, reference the public S3 URL to your report and to your script in your cover letter.
  • Be sure to remove any Amazon passwords from your script before sending it to us.
