Bounce.io finalized a $4.8 million Series A funding last week from Foundry Group, Bullet Time Ventures and SK Ventures.

The Louisville location of Bounce.io, run by Switch Labs Inc., offers the perfect vantage point from which to hire talent from the Boulder and Denver areas, and with this new influx of first round funding the company is now looking to expand its current team of 10 to up to twice that size.

Bounce.io was founded by COO Tom Bartel and CEO Scott Brown, who came from background in email systems and social cloud network data and saw an untapped opportunity in the 31 billion emails bounced back every day. Just about a year ago, the company started to provide solutions that capture those emails into revenue streams.

When an email is sent to wrong recipient or wrong domain, Bounce.io aims to  improve upon the bounced-back email received by the sender. These emails include a placed sponsored advertisement that translates the email into plain English, rather than in unintelligible technical jargon. The process also allows Bounce.io to collect information for anti-spam data collection which filters into their security and fraud prevention solutions.

The funding appears to be a perfect fit for both Bounce.io and Foundry, which has extensive interest in the email space (as apparent from investments in ReturnPath and SendGrid) in addition to heavy investment in other web-based companies. Foundry’s past support of successful Boulder-based companies was  appealing to the Bounce.io team: “We just happened to find a partner that was very symbiotic early on,” Megan Barbour, SVP of Marketing at Bounce.io, said.

The focus, says Megan, is to “Enhance our tech and focus on more on mailbox providers. We’ve already made a lot of headway with domains.” Bounce.io currently already works with 22 million segment of parked domains. Overall, the aim to continually become “Louder, Faster, Funnier” – a company motto coined by Scott Brown.
