Men may still outnumber women in the tech field, but that’s something the amazing women profiled below are changing. In their own words, read stories from women on the front-line of coding in Colorado.  Learn how they are forging their way, making great products, impacting the lives of those around them and get their take on entering the field.

What was your first job in technology?

Technically, I suppose it was a lab monitor/tutor for Computer Science in college. However, I'd actually count my first internship, which transitioned into my first post-collegiate job, at a start-up in Maryland, called Kajeet. We built and maintained a web application for parents to configure and manage their children's cell phone usage.

I see that you’ve worked at a number of start-ups. What is the best part of a start-up? What draws you to that type of work?

Yup! Until recently, I had only worked at start-ups. I really enjoy them because there's a lot of opportunity for learning many facets of development. With a limited number of employees it's difficult to avoid any particular part of the development stack. You get to experience front-end development, back-end development, configuration, deployment and get your feet wet in different areas. Even though you may eventually want to focus in one area, I think that type of environment is good for creating a well-rounded skill set. Additionally, the fast-paced nature can be quite exciting.

How does working with GDI impact your view on the tech world and women?

GDI is such a wonderful organization and I'm excited to be a part of it. I haven't had an opportunity to work directly with many other women developers and I'm eager to see that change. Women bring a different perspective and that can have a positive effect on a team environment. It has been really incredible to see the impact GDI has had -- we've watched GDI students learn and transition to teaching assistants as they've gained new skills. I love when somebody has an "ah-hah" moment and a concept clicks.

What is your secret weapon?

Secret weapon?! Probably cookies. Well, cookies and a good support system. Having people who believe in your potential is a really powerful thing. I've had more moments of self-doubt than I can count and a little bit of positive reinforcement goes a long way. And cookies because they fuel afternoon coding.

Who or what groups do you admire in the Colorado tech community?

The support of the entire tech community for GDI has been incredible. So many different groups and companies believe in our mission and have reached out to help with offers to teach, provide space and food, and increase awareness. Cara Jo and I are so grateful and excited to have their support.

What advice do you have for women just starting out in the field?

Master the basics and never stop learning. A strong foundation is important to build upon. Regardless how technology changes and grows, some things will be ubiquitous. However, tech is a rapidly evolving field and keeping up to date is important as well.
