Colorado CTOs you should know: Rishi Malik, Parkifi

is revolutionizing the way cities and parking garage owners think about and manage parking. Rishi Malik, CTO and cofounder of Parkifi, is building the cutting edge technology powering that revolution. Malik is a graduate of the Colorado School of Mines, and previous to his role at Parkifi, he was the Manager of Software Engineering at SendGrid. We caught up with Malik and picked his brain on the Colorado tech scene. Here's what he had to say:

What technologies power your business? Everything from cloud servers for our platform to tiny magnetometers in our sensors. We write code in C, Java, Ruby, and JS (Angular) and have started mixing in some Elixir as well.

What upcoming tech projects are you most proud of? It's hard to pick one! We've been doing a ton of work across our product. UI refreshes, scalability and reliability work, and cleanup of tech debt.

What trends do you see in the tech scene over the next three years? I think there will be continual growth in the hardware space. As new technologies make hardware cheaper and easier to develop, we'll see a lot of fun and exciting new products complementing existing tech.

What sort of people do you look for when hiring? People who are passionate about solving problems. There's a ton of challenges in what we do, so we look for people who love figuring out a puzzle.

What are some lessons you've learned about working in Colorado? Words of wisdom? Colorado is a perfect place to start a business. An amazing talent pool, a dedicated community and great economics give Colorado an advantage. Use the location to your advantage, a time difference of 1-2 hours makes it easy to do business on both coasts. Just don't be afraid to hop on a plane when necessary.
