On-demand valet parking launches in Denver

If you’re planning on having a night on the town in Denver, you might want to consider downloading the BluCar app. As anyone who has ever driven into downtown Denver on a weekend knows, finding parking near your destination can be… daunting.

But BluCar, a Boulder based startup, announced this week it was partnering with LEG Valet to offer a smarter way to park in the city. This partnership will allow users to request on-demand valet parking in several areas.

“LEG Valet is very excited about bringing this type of technology to Denver as a way to offer our customers a convenient service and parking solution during an evening out,” Dante Dunlap, CEO of LEG Valet, said in a statement. “People are already using similar technologies for taxi services so we believe cloud parking will be equally as popular.”

Thursday through Saturday, from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m., you can use BluCar’s app to have a valet come to where you are and park your car for you. Right now the service is available in the Larimer Square, Union Station and the Lower Highlands neighborhoods.

“The idea behind the BluCar App is to offer customers on-demand parking at the front door of their destination so they don’t have to search for parking or return to a dark parking lot or garage in the evening,” Rich Schmelzer, CEO of BluCar, said in a statement. “The app is especially appealing to couples on date night who don’t want to be separated while one goes to find parking and the other goes into the restaurant and waits or to ladies who don’t want to walk for blocks in their new spring heels.”

The app is simple enough to use, and fairly intuitive. When you open the app on your phone you see “safe zones” where you can request a valet. Drive into one and drop a point on the map. A short while later, a valet dressed in an LEG branded bright blue shirt will appear to drive your car to a secure location. When you want your car back you tell the app where you want the valet to drop it off, and your car will reappear within 10 minutes.

The app also allows for real-time tracking, so you can see where the valet is taking your car – avoiding anything reminiscent of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. You also pay for the service through the app, so there’s no need to stress over bringing small bills or change for a meter.

Currently the service is only available in San Diego, Boulder and Denver, though there are plans to expand the service in Seattle and Los Angeles later this year.
