Dr. Vaithyanathan joins us to discuss Legal Language Understanding: the problem of building AI software to understand Legal Documents, with a focus on Business Contracts. The lecture will explore:

• The definition of what it means to understand contracts and the challenges in obtaining meaningful labeled data to learn and evaluate models.
•  Linguistics Models with the intention to capture the linguistic structures that determine the semantics of Contracts
• The performance of Deep Learning Models on the same Contracts data.
• Dr. Vaithyanathan’s initial observations from his exploration on trying to understand what Deep Learning Models learn vis-a-vis Linguistics Models, for the task of Legal Language Understanding.
