The Taxonomist supports the day-to-day function of the Data & Marketing Solutions group by classifying transactions into a taxonomy using rules-based query language. Taxonomists work directly with the data, contextualizing it for better analysis, and continually audit and update the taxonomy to grow with datasets and best serve our clients. A successful Taxonomist has an eye for detail, a knack for research, and communicates issues or questions clearly with their team. As part of the Engineering Group, the Taxonomist works with other taxonomists on team initiatives and with cross-functional teams for special projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
● Research terms for classification within our standard taxonomy process utilizing the internet as well as our internal taxonomy.
● Utilizes in-house software to classify daily imports of transaction data.
● Follows process and procedure document in daily tasks
● Identify opportunities for rules adjustments as well as creating new rules that allow for accurate automatic classification.
● Fill gaps in data coverage for new businesses.
● Proactively identify and remediate incorrect categorizations.
● Collaborate on team efforts on special projects and cross functional teams.
● Mentor junior team members.
Recommended Experience & Education
Minimum Years of Experience
Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced
degree without experience
Education Level Bachelor’s degree in Library or Information Science or another related field or equivalent work experience
Knowledge, Skills, & Qualifications
Required
● Demonstrates a proficiency in taxonomy classification and understands hierarchical ontologies.
● Advanced computer skills (Browsers, Google Docs, Gmail, Windows)
● Proficiency in internet research and finding smaller brands.
● Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
● Can work independently with minimal supervision.
● Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders both written and verbal.
● Curiosity for solving problems and finding answers.
● High degree of: quality, accuracy, accountability.
● Collaborate with stakeholders within the team and business function to understand business requirements, priorities, and challenges.
Preferred
● Masters of Library and Information Science or equivalent
Physical Demands
● Ability to lift a minimum of 5 pounds to a maximum of 10 pounds unassisted
● Ability to stand, sit, stoop, walk, stretch, reach, and use full range of body motions
● Manual dexterity as required for specific equipment
