Job Summary

The Staff Accountant supports CIVHC’s financial management, reporting, and compliance processes by ensuring accurate, timely, and transparent financial operations in accordance with GAAP and applicable federal and state requirements. This role leads general ledger accounting, financial reporting, grant and program accounting, internal controls, and audit support across CIVHC’s full work portfolio. The Staff Accountant collaborates closely with the CFAO, Director of Finance and Administration, auditors, and department leads to strengthen financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, and organizational accountability.

Hybrid Work Model

This position is based in Denver, Colorado. Because CIVHC operates under a hybrid work model with a requirement of at least one in-office day per week (unless otherwise approved), candidates must reside within a commutable distance to the Denver metro area. 

Limited relocation assistance may be available for out-of-state candidates who intend to relocate to the Denver area.

Duties/Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Lead general ledger activities, journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, and grant/program accounting, including variance analysis.
  • Maintain accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and relevant federal/state regulations.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, subledgers, and grant/donation management systems.
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules, depreciation, and lease documentation.
  • Support budgeting and forecasting by preparing financial data, templates, and analyses.
  • Issue timely financial reporting for leadership, the Finance Committee, and the Board.

Payroll, Accounts Payable & Transaction Support

  • Review payroll and prepare payroll journal entries for accurate financial reporting.
  • Process accounts payable and credit card transactions; ensure accurate and timely data entry in accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Bill.com).

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Prepare audit schedules and documentation; serve as liaison to external auditors for the annual audit.
  • Maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure policy compliance.
  • Support federal, state, and local reporting, including 1099 preparation and documentation for tax filings.

Grant, Fund & Investment Support

  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds to ensure proper revenue recognition and compliance with donor intent.
  • Support reporting for grants, government contracts, and regulatory filings.
  • Record monthly investment activity and maintain investment schedules.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with the CFAO and finance team to develop financial analyses and organizational metrics.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources on benefits-related accounting, budgeting, and compliance.
  • Provide financial insights to internal teams and contribute to a culture of transparency and continuous improvement.

Required Skills / Abilities

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Bill.com) and advanced Excel skills.

Education & Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience in a nonprofit or small business environment.

Preferred:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation.
  • Experience with health care data or health care-related organizations.
  • Experience with nonprofit fund accounting, grant reporting, and federal contracts.

Physical Requirements

 Primarily computer-based work with extended periods of sitting, typing, and concentration. May occasionally require light lifting of office materials.

  • Using a computer and keyboard for typing and data entry.
  • Reaching and stretching to access files or equipment.
  • Lifting and carrying light objects such as papers or office supplies.
  • Walking short distances within the office environment.
  • Operating office equipment such as printers, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Occasionally bending or stooping to retrieve items from lower shelves or cabinets.
  • Maintaining good posture to prevent discomfort or strain.
  • Using a telephone or headset for communication.
  • Ability to focus and concentrate for prolonged periods.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $105,000 - $115,000 annually, based on experience, education, and internal equity.
