Job Description
The Cloud Operations Leader will be responsible for overseeing Vertafore's AWS cloud environment, optimizing cloud spend, ensuring smooth migration of applications from data centers to AWS, and maintaining operational excellence across legacy and new cloud-native products. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong technical acumen, excellent stakeholder management skills, and experience in cloud migration and cost optimization.
This role is pivotal in ensuring that Vertafore's cloud journey is efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with business growth. The Cloud Operations Leader will serve as a strategic partner to executive leadership and a technical mentor to operational teams, ensuring that the AWS environment supports its evolving product portfolio. This position will report to the head of infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Cloud Spend Optimization & Cost Management
  • Monitor, analyze, and optimize AWS spend with a focus on cost efficiency and scalability.
  • Develop and implement cost-saving strategies, leveraging AWS tools and best practices.
  • Collaborate with finance teams to forecast future cloud expenditures and align budgets with business goals.

2. Cloud Migration Planning & Oversight
  • Actively support the migration of products from data centers to AWS, ensuring minimal disruption and adherence to timelines.
  • Work closely with engineering, IT, DevOps, and product management teams to develop comprehensive migration strategies, including assessment, planning, and execution.
  • Ensure migration plans are well-structured, risk-managed, and aligned with business objectives.

3. Stakeholder & Partner Management
  • Maintain strong relationships with AWS Solution Architects, Account Managers, and other AWS support teams to leverage technical expertise and ensure support during migration and ongoing operations.
  • Communicate plans, risks, and progress effectively to executive leadership, product teams, and other stakeholders.

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work with finance, engineering, IT, DevOps, and product teams to ensure operational stability, security, and compliance of products hosted in AWS.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination across teams to manage risks, resolve issues, and ensure transparency.
  • Promote best practices in cloud operations, automation, security, and governance.

5. Operational Excellence & Risk Management
  • Establish and maintain operational processes, SLAs, and KPIs for cloud environments.
  • Oversee incident management, security, and compliance in AWS working closely with the Security leader and CTO.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve cloud infrastructure resilience, automation, and monitoring.

7. Documentation & Communication
  • Ensure all migration and operational plans are thoroughly documented.
  • Communicate effectively with technical teams and executive leadership regarding project status, risks, and opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Proven experience in cloud operations in AWS, managing large-scale environments with annual spend exceeding $10M.
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Business Information Engineering, or established professional with equivalent experience.
  • 10+ or more years with Infrastructure and Operations
  • Hands-on experience with cloud migration projects, including assessment, planning, execution, and post-migration optimization.
  • Deep understanding of AWS services, cost management tools, and automation frameworks (e.g., CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS CLI).
  • Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams including finance, engineering, IT, DevOps, and product management.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with AWS solution architects and account managers.
  • Experience with security, compliance, and risk management in cloud environments.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Knowledge of legacy systems and modern cloud-native architecture.
  • AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, or Cloud Practitioner.
  • Experience in Insurtech or similar regulated industries.
