Solution Engineer

Position Description
The Solution Engineer (SE) is primarily responsible for driving top line revenue in partnership with Sales, serving as the technical source of truth in both internal and external interactions. This includes ownership of the designs of complex solutions within the assigned patch of accounts and a thorough understanding of how Zayo’s solutions will interact with customer ecosystems. This requires a thorough technical understanding of all of Zayo’s products across the Connectivity, Cloud, and Colocation product suites, as well as a deep familiarity with Zayo’s assets used to deliver solutions, with a primary focus on Connectivity offerings.
As the technical expert for the Zayo account team, the SE will additionally be responsible for partnering in the preparation and delivery of technical presentations, acting as a subject matter expert in all offerings, and helping to both develop sales opportunities and drive them to closure. Development of technical expertise within the ecosystem of assigned customer verticals is a must. Ongoing consultation with sales and engineering teams after sales are closed is critical to ensuring ongoing customer satisfaction with Zayo and its products, and the SE is expected to partner across the Zayo ecosystem, playing a role throughout the lifecycle of the customer relationship.
Responsibilities
Sales Focus and Solution Design
Provide technical consultation to customers and internal stakeholders to accelerate the sales cycle and drive opportunities from development to close
Analyze customer requirements to understand how Zayo products and services can be applied to meet their needs and solve their problems, within the context of both their business and technical environments
Spearhead the design of cost-effective solutions that solve customer requirements in a challenging environment and maintain ownership of designs from both internal- and external-facing perspectives
Participate in the creation and delivery of face-to-face technical presentations that demonstrate mastery of Zayo’s products and services
Respond to requests for bids and proposals by providing fully-documented technical solutions, with diagrams, that clearly outline all technical components of the solution
Technical Expertise
Translate complex technical information into language that customers and internal stakeholders can understand and engage with
Keep abreast of competitive landscape and emerging technologies in order to best position Zayo in the marketplace
Provide coaching to other team members from a technical and business perspective, both tactically (opportunity level) and strategically (account level)
General
Adhere to all company standards and overall business professionalism
Ensure all projects and tasks are completed accurately, timely, and independently
Demonstrate regular, consistent, and punctual attendance
Be a trusted expert for all matters technical
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Five (5) years’ experience in a technical or sales role within the telecommunications industry, ideally with at least two (2) years in technical sales engineering or Solution Engineering role
Expert-level technical and design skills with MAN and WAN technologies required
Experience with Colocation and Cloud IaaS offerings a plus
Excellent presentation skills (development and delivery) with experience in front of CIO, CTO and other technical stakeholders strongly preferred
Excellent project management skills and the ability to seamlessly manage a significant number of distinct tasks and projects required
Ability to handle ambiguity, and anticipate and quickly react to changes in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to explain technical concepts to laypersons in simple, understandable terms
Consistent focus on results and goal achievement
Preferred Areas of Technical Background:
Expertise in networking protocols (emphasis on OSI Layers 1, 2, and 3)
Knowledge of a variety of transport and Ethernet equipment vendors and models
High-level understanding of Fiber Optic network design and implementation
In-depth understanding of the telecom ecosystem and customer technology ecosystems
Proficiency with GIS systems and Google Earth
