YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS VP PRODUCT

1. Lead the Product Vision and Road Map

  • You work with the CEO and other key executives to ensure a robust product vision and road map is set and adhered to. A great product leader should be able to work with the CEO on company strategy and own the product road map.

  • You use the product vision to drive and inspire the company and sustain the company through ups and downs.

  • You think in generational leaps, not incremental improvements.

2. Think Strategically and Articulate that Strategy

  • You lay out a compelling product strategy that includes a strong understanding of:

    • who our customers really are

    • what it means to win in our market

    • how to differentiate us as a product and company (staying on top of the competition, knowing what’s noise and what needs a response)

    • how to build compelling and remarkable products for our customers.

  • You keep the team focused on the customer and the market.

  • You understand the current state of your product, current investments in knowledge and technology, and work to leverage these.

  • You articulate the product vision and why it’s important, both internally and externally.

  • You talk to customers every week in a methodical way, uncovering opportunities & building lasting relationships.

  • You bring real-world customer input to company strategy meetings.

3. Execute

  • You know how to get things done and have absolutely proven this ability.

  • You establish and demand tight, clear metrics, understanding that you will be fired if you don’t hit these targets.

  • You work closely with engineering to make time/feature tradeoffs quickly.

  • You sweat the business’ overall success. Are you missing key segments, or being outflanked by new competitors, or stuck in an old business model? What are the important (cross-product) decisions that will drive longer-term revenue?

4. Create and Empower a Professional Product Management Team

  • You recruit experienced product managers who have overseen multiple stages of the lifecycle of high use products, and who have shipped products at scale.

  • You empower PMs in your organization to work effectively and get things done.

  • You build programs to train and support new PMs, ensuring that you have proper mentoring and training to support new PMs.

  • You manage headcount, consulting spend and execution, software/tools cost, travel and entertainment, professional development, and more in a stage-appropriate manner.

5. Set Cross-company, Best-practice Product Management Processes

  • You are the central spoke in communicating with, integrating feedback from, and pushing back on design, engineering, sales, marketing, clinical, customer support, and other functions. You build deep relationships and are able to work with many different functions and personality types effectively. You collaborate across functions to develop something together that individuals alone would not come up with.

  • You develop processes needed to run product development efficiently, prioritize product decisions, and launch products. You ensure adoption of these processes by the broader company.

  • You know how to validate ideas cheaply - looking at data, talking to users, setting up tests, building paper prototypes, etc.

  • You build a strong product culture, helping the team to understand the importance of continuous and rapid testing and learning. You understand that you need to make mistakes in order to learn, but you need to make them quickly and mitigate the risks. You understand the need for continuous innovation. You know that great products are the result of true collaboration.
