POSITION SUMMARY:

The candidate will initially be focused upon and responsible for developing and implementing E. coli fermentation (0.25 - 25 L scale) to support protein production at Invitae.  Ongoing responsibilities will be for executing recombinant protein production and analysis activities with the Protein Manufacturing group.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job performance will involve a variety of activities including:

  • Process development for optimization of E. coli growth and protein overexpression using single use fermentation bioreactors and shake flasks
  • Evaluation of new E. coli strain backgrounds
  • Optimization of cell harvest and lysis conditions
  • Establishing and maintaining Master and Working Cell Banks
  • Use of molecular biology skills including plasmid construction, subcloning, PCR
  • Contribute to the writing of SOPs and technical reports for the fermentation processes
  • Individual will be the primary point of contact for fermentation CMOs as backup sources
  • Ensuring compliance to in-house and/or external specifications and standards (i.e. GLP, GMP, ISO)
  • Compiling information and results into meaningful formats to ensure content is appropriately represented.  This may involve presenting the information to internal clients
  • Working in a professional and collaborative manner with coworkers and prospective users
  • Implement upstream and downstream manufacturing processes to meet user and Quality requirements, including execution of batch records using Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
  • Maintain facilities, protein process equipment, and supplies


KEY ATTRIBUTES:

  • Solid understanding of E. coli fermentation and process optimization
  • General understanding of protein purification, biochemistry, and protein chemistry
  • Drive and determination
  • Strong writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Ability to participate with others as a member of the team to ensure that demanding and difficult projects are handled smoothly and cooperatively to enhance the success of the projects and maintain strong relationships with all parts of the company
  • Self-starter and self-directed: needs little explicit direction
  • Able to organize, prioritize, and delegate tasks to efficiently move projects forward


EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory setting
  • 3+ years of experience in industry setting
  • Previously laboratory experience with fermentation, general molecular biology techniques, and equipment
  • Direct protein purification experience preferred
  • Knowledge of cGMP/CFR/FDA regulations


EDUCATION:

  • MS degree with 1-2 years of experience, or
  • BS degree with 3-5 years of experience in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, chemical engineering, or a related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

In Colorado, our competitive compensation package includes a base salary starting from $65,000 per year. In determining the final salary offered we will evaluate a specific candidate geographic location, education, skills and experience.
