The Senior Manager of Risk Management is responsible for the overall strategy and execution of Maxar Technologies’ insurance and risk management programs, which include, but is not limited to strong knowledge of insurance programs, handling claims/losses, interfacing with Third Party Administrators (TPA’s) and legal counsel, administering the risk management program on a daily basis, managing and analyzing risk management data, conducting risk management education programs and leading projects focused on loss reduction and safety. The position requires collaboration with various business units, brokers and underwriters, and claim personnel to identify exposures to loss and develop techniques to eliminate or minimize the impact of loss on the company’s assets and operations. Also, as part of the Treasury Department, the Director, Risk Management may provide assistance on Treasury-related issues.
Candidates must be creative and outgoing, have excellent analytical and communication skills, thrive in a high-performance culture, be willing to take on broader finance projects, think proactively and possess good business sense.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and manage comprehensive and competitive insurance programs.
  • Conductmarket negotiations of policy terms, conditions, structure and pricing for lines of coverage including but not limited to launch and on-orbit space insurance, domestic and foreign casualty, property, D&O, professional, cyber, marine, aviation, etc.
  • Research, evaluate and make recommendations regarding current and state-of-the-art trends in risk management, safety and loss control strategies.
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, total cost of risk analysis, premium allocations, liability reserve analyses and manage premium audits and retro calculations.
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of global insurance claims processes, coordinate with businesses, legal, and other functions, as required, to ensure timely and appropriate settlement of claims. Participate in claim review meetings and analysis of claim reserves.
  • Perform M&A due diligence, identifying and analyzing significant risk management and insurance issues, estimating cost synergies, compiling required underwriting data and making appropriate recommendations.
  • Negotiate and maintain strong relationships with and manage services provided by insurers, brokers, TPAs and other service providers necessary to the risk management programs.
  • Review contracts and other legal documents to evaluate risk related provisions and make recommendations while assuring compliance with insurance and risk management policies.
  • Maintain updated schedule of insurance and detailed policy summaries for internal use.

    Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 10 years progressive global risk / insurance industry experience obtained in either a risk management corporate function, insurance company or broker.
  • Business acumen--ability to understand and evaluate complex business/financial concepts and perform financial analysis to support development of a recommendation.
  • Experience in undertaking operational risks and insurance assessment including ability to identify, analyze and assess key risk exposures and identify potential insurance or retention mitigants;  
  • Experience in managing global commercial insurance programs, including placing covers and renewals in international markets.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
