Position Details: The Histotechnologist/Histotechnician I, under limited supervision, performs technical procedures in the IHC/Histology laboratory. Routine tasks include specimen processing, specimen embedding, FFPE sectioning, frozen sectioning, and staining.

Essential Job Functions
- Perform immunohistochemical and histological procedures
Perform assay development to ensure ideal staining conditions for antibodies
Participate in other research activities
Operate and maintain general laboratory equipment including analytical balance, pH meter, tissue processor, embedding center, microtome, cryostat and autostainers
Record keeping and documentation of all laboratory procedures to ensure quality control standards are being met
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all equipment and tests including maintaining proper documentation; annual review of all SOPs
Perform routine special stains per established procedures and histology standards
Utilize technical and troubleshooting skills and strengths to quickly and efficiently complete projects
Work as part of a project team to complete projects
Attend and contribute to project team meetings
Assist in organizing work and storage space and in general lab upkeep
Complete a minimum of 5 hours of continuing education on an annual basis, including attendance at required meetings
Cross train, special projects, and other duties, as assigned
Basic Qualifications
- Histotechnologist (HTL, ASCP) or Histotechnician (HT, ASCP) Certification and
- 0 to 3 years of experience in animal and human research using histology skills: embedding, sectioning and staining
- Advanced knowledge of human anatomy, cellular structure and function
- Advanced laboratory technical skills, including ability to multitask, troubleshoot, and perform quality control work ata high level with minimal oversight
- Advanced technical understanding of immunohistochemical staining procedures
- Ability to work well in a team setting
- Demonstrated problem solving/troubleshooting skills
- Ability to complete a minimum of 5 hours of continuing education, including attending required meetings
- Ability to work overtime hours, as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological/Life Science preferred
- Knowledge of fluorescent assays
- Presenting scientific ideas in a group setting
- Advanced knowledge of Immunohistochemistry and In‐situ hybridization assays, including troubleshooting and development of new assays

Typical work environment is primarily in a laboratory setting, where the employee is frequently exposed to laboratory chemicals, infectious diseases, lung/skin irritations; occasionally exposed to blood/body fluid and noise/vibration. The stress level in this position is considered moderate.
