What you’ll do:

Pinnacol is on a journey to embody diversity, equity and inclusion. We’re committed to creating a culture that deeply values differences, where everyone feels like they belong and to reflect the diversity of the business and communities we serve.  While we believe it is everyone’s responsibility to drive this work and live these values, we will look to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director - a newly created position -  to provide leadership and vision across the organization. 

As a strategic leader, reporting to the Chief of Human Resources, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Director is the champion of Pinnacol’s overall DEI strategy.  They Collaborate across the organization and serve as a subject matter expert in identifying opportunities to reduce barriers to equity and advance cultural competency of our systems and processes. They encompass a strategic vision for continuing to elevate DEI throughout the organization, which includes partnering with stakeholders across the organization, including executives, employee resource groups and Pinnacol’s DEI advisory council to build structures, practices and behaviors that drive accountability at both the leadership level and throughout the organization. 

What you can expect:

Diversity Equity and Inclusion Leadership:  Lead the development and execution of Pinnacol’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy.

  • Provide expertise and knowledge of DEI best practices effectively tailored to Pinnacol’s DEI vision and commitments.  
  • Partner with stakeholders across the organization to make changes in systems and practices to operationalize equity. Work collaboratively with functional business leaders and value streams to ensure a systems-level approach to Talent Systems, Culture and Business Ecosystems. 
  • Ensure integrated outcomes and broad ownership of equity and inclusion goals and key performance indicators.   
  • Collaborate with the DEI advisory council to develop DEI outcomes which will inform communication, change management work and accountability for goals. 
  • Establish relationships with outside vendors and organizations to build ties in talent communities and continue to raise awareness of Pinnacol’s commitment to DEI.

Learning and Management Development -  Create a learning strategy to support the development of inclusive mindsets, behaviors, and practices across the organization.  Support the development of people leaders including their ability to effectively engage and educate others, and establish diverse teams. 

  • In partnership with the DEI Advisory Council, and Learning and Organization Development team, oversee the design, coordination and delivery of DEI learning opportunities for comprehensive development which support the strategies developed within the organizational value streams.   .   
  • Ensure all staff have opportunities for professional development on DEI topics. Tailor learning based upon levels within the organization.   
  • Collaboratively develop communication strategies to support DEI awareness and engagement at all levels of the organization. 

Supplier Diversity -   Support implementation and enhancement of Pinnacol’s supplier diversity program which includes policies, procedures, objectives and communications to increase the opportunities for and the utilization of diverse suppliers. 

  • Partner with teams to identify business opportunities to utilize diverse suppliers including understanding service requirements, and identifying/engaging qualified diverse suppliers for consideration. 
  • Implement new and innovative methods to identify and qualify diverse supplier candidates.
  • Support efforts to build relationships with various local and diverse organizations within the community. 
  • Work closely with Pinnacol’s enterprise risk manager to measure and report diverse spend and activity including assisting in analyzing data and developing presentation materials. 

Cultural Change -  Ability to connect the DEI work plan to the larger organization strategy and influence decision making.   Understands the dynamics associated with the strategic implementation of DEI.  

  • Build strategic relationships with key internal stakeholders to influence commitment to DEI and effectively coach others through challenges.  
  • Help shape Pinnacol’s DEI journey and strategies through fostering relationships in all areas of the organization.
  • Skilled in change management. Ensure leadership is aligned around the inclusive behavior and culture.  Collaboratively work with the DEI advisory council in shaping and continually communicating Pinnacol’s DEI journey, including vision and goals. 
  • Lead by example and hold self and others accountable to Pinnacol’s DEI commitments, behaviors and values.   Model and execute inclusive behaviors and skills consistently and with everyone.  

Accountability, Monitoring & Measuring DEI effectiveness  - Develop processes and systems to help Pinnacol assess current state, evaluate progress and measure impact of DEI efforts. 

  • Collect, analyze and act on data.  In partnership with stakeholders across the organization and the human resource team track and leverage data to identify gaps and trends, and measure change and impact over time.
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to present data in an easy-to-understand, visual format. Prepare and present to multiple audiences including senior management and the Board. 
  • Work closely with the DEI Advisory Council, executives and leaders in the organization in setting and achieving Pinnacol’s DEI goals

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Keeps current on diversity programs and developments by maintaining contact with others in the field (e.g., professional association and educational groups and professional development efforts).
  • Stays current on emerging issues and trends in DEI work and makes recommendations as there are opportunities.

What you need to be successful:

  • Experience in leading, developing and monitoring initiatives around diversity, equity and inclusion.  Should have demonstrated examples of building out and implementing dynamic DEI plans for scaling organizations. 
  • Experience with employee engagement/employee experience or organizational development is not required but preferred. 
  • Strong network and knowledge of the DEI communities.
  • Experience working with DEI committees and employee resource groups. 
  • Passion: Passion and ability to build credibility and establish trust within the organization and engage with a variety of communities supporting elevating DEI efforts.
  • Communication: Ability to effectively collaborate, influence and connect with individuals at all levels of the organization.  Strong influencing skills with the ability to shape, define, and present a complete and thorough picture to connect DEI initiatives to business needs.  
  • Demonstrated advanced learning through education achievement and/or Professional certifications.

We consider what you’d like to be paid, the skills and experience you bring, what similar jobs pay in the Denver area and make sure there’s equal pay for equal work among those you’ll be working with.  The compensation amount for this role is targeted at $134,150.00 - $141,500.00.  Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including your experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

If you decide to come into the office, we’re just seven miles from downtown Denver, in the heart of the Lowry neighborhood. Our office is minutes away from a variety of restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, fitness facilities and lush parks and open spaces.
