Computer Operator II/Data Center Technician I (Night shift)
Job Description:
At present, we have an exciting opportunity for a Computer Operator II/Data Center Technician I on the Computer Operations team.
Your primary responsibilities are monitoring and operational tasks of critical applications running on a variety of IT systems in a high availability, 24x7x365 Data Center. In this capacity, you will address issues and escalate when appropriate; seek guidance from the lead and supervisors when necessary and take responsibility for assigned activities in accordance with application/analytics monitoring.
Beyond the primary role, you will be responsible for the installation of data center infrastructure materials including: racks and cabinets w/grounding, cable tray and ladder, cable management, copper and fiber networking cable, copper and fiber patch panels, and any other materials necessary for data center operations.
You will perform daily walk-throughs in the data center and associated spaces to check for alarms in data center equipment including: HVAC systems, power distribution systems, fire detection and suppression systems, access control and security systems, servers, network equipment and any other devices installed and in operation.
What You'll Be Doing:
- With minimal guidance, possess the ability to operate the various systems within the Data Center.
- Possess superior customer services soft skills in addition to the ability to assume ownership of the quality customer service experience.
- Successfully interpret instructions provided within a trouble ticketing system.
- Ability to work as a member of a small team taking direction from more senior members as needed.
- Using tools provided, monitor all processing that occurs during the shift.
- Perform restarts of failed jobs using basic skills.
- Ensures that systems are up, running and available.
- Escalates to Lead and or Shift Supervisor any issues that may impact system availability.
- Overtime and working over holidays/weekends as scheduled is a requirement as part of the position.
- Rack and stack equipment which include servers, network, routers and storage gear.
- Swap out failed hardware as in (power supplies, network cards, memory sticks, disk drives).
- Respond to customer remote hands requests and automated monitoring alerts
- Maintain established inventory controls
- Update and maintain documentation
- Provide 24x7 on-call support as required.
What You'll Need:
- Has developed specialized skills or is multi-skilled through job-related training and on-the-job experience.
- Ability to run fiber and copper network cabling according to industry practices and company standards
- Able to stand and walk for a full 8 hour shift
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds continuously
- Ability to safely load, transfer, and unload pallets and skids.
- Ability to safely use material handling tools and equipment.
- Physical functions required to perform this job include lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, transporting, sorting, piling and stacking. Activities are routine and repetitive in nature.
- Has experience with automated job scheduling products.
- Strong communication skills both written and oral.
- Completes work with a limited degree of supervision.
- Identifies key issues and patterns from partial/conflicting data.
- Takes a broad perspective to problems and spots new, less obvious solutions.
- High school graduate or two-year degree with three to five years of experience.
Preferred Skills:
- Two years server/raised floor experience, network, and systems experience, including knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, SSH, SNMP.
- Copper/fiber optic terminating experience.
- Ability to work effectively with Excel, Word, Visio and similar online tools
- General knowledge of telecommunications technologies, systems, and circuits.
- General knowledge of HVAC & electrical distribution systems, UPSes, and generators.
- General knowledge of common network protocols, physical network topologies, the OSI model.
- Network+, A+, or Security+ Cert preferred, ITIL Foundation III
