The role

Outrider seeks a Supervisor, Electronics Vehicle Assembly Operations to help usher in the evolution of private-property autonomous trucking by leading and overseeing system assembly. This is a mid-level position focused on the full manufacturing process, including participating in design reviews to ensure and improve manufacturability (using design for manufacture and assembly - DFMA - principles); working with the Quality team to implement guidelines and follow appropriate processes; and supporting continuous improvement via the use of troubleshooting and other techniques. The Supervisor, Electronics Vehicle Assembly Operations is also expected to be the interface between assembly operations and the end-of-line tests led by manufacturing engineers.

This role reports to the Director of Assembly Operations and is crucial to the successful build and deployment of the Outrider System. As such, an extensive background in retrofit/assembly operations is required, experience normally gained from working on US Department of Defense projects and/or autonomous vehicles. Overall, this position requires a detailed-oriented, energetic individual who has an excellent background in automotive, aerospace, or similarly complex, integrated hardware/software products and thrives in a rapidly changing, “roll-up-your-sleeves” environment.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and be able to navigate between engineering, operations, and commercial teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the hour-to-hour assembly of multiple vehicle systems simultaneously, providing status updates and prioritizing troubleshooting support between vehicle builds and end-of-line testing
  • Build systems while meeting KPIs for safety, quality, cost and schedule
  • Provide daily and weekly metrics to the Operations team
  • Work continuously to improve the Outrider System by optimizing assembly processes and sharing feedback with engineering and own the assembly work instructions
  • Partner with the engineering division, manufacturing engineers and the support engineering team in the field to maintain a constant communication flow
  • Use root-cause analysis to quickly resolve complex assembly problems at multiple levels of the autonomous vehicle
  • Roll out and follow 5S disciplines, where appropriate
  • Implement successive inspection / quality assurance processes to minimize rework activities measured by first-pass yield
  • Travel occasionally for business (up to 10%, including international) -- required to visit component 3rd-party assemblers/CMs to administer assembly training.

Required qualifications

  • 7-10+ years in vehicle upgrades, retrofit and/or assembly of complex electro-mechanical, software-intensive systems
  • Experience as a site lead, leading multiple assembly teams within an emerging technology
  • Have led quality standards minimizing Defects per million opportunity (DPMO) near zero (quality first mentality)
  • Fluency in engineering design documentation (Bill of Materials - BoM, schematics, drawings, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing - GD&T) and Engineering change request/ Engineering change order (ECR/ECO) workflows with configuration management
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems on the assembly line and follow through on resolution
  • Familiarity with general assembly techniques and best practices for modular assembly, mistake-proofing, and general cell and line layout
  • Expertise in lean training process analysis and troubleshooting
  • Ability to create assembly instructions with limited input from engineering
  • Extensive experience with complex electronic components such as radar, laser, and communication equipment
  • Troubleshooting skills with complex electromechanical systems
  • Familiarity with software, networking, and basic software troubleshooting
  • Ability to work in an embedded software environment and properly install and configure software and FW in manufacturing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Sterling references

Ideal qualifications

  • Autonomous robotics assembly and/or vehicle assembly and testing experience
  • Familiarity with vehicle subsystems such as braking systems, steering, pneumatics and cabling
  • Six Sigma training process analysis and troubleshooting background

  • Salary range of $75,000 - $85,000. For benefits, check this out!
