Zoom is looking for a Patent Counsel to join our dynamic and fast growing Legal team. We are looking for someone with deep patent experience who will focus on building a world-class patent portfolio, contentious patent matters (pre-litigation and litigation), and other areas requiring patent counseling. You will have the opportunity to help shape the company’s strategy in these areas.
In this role, you will:
Build a world-class patent portfolio that protects Zoom’s innovations around the world
Work closely with product managers and engineers to identify inventions that are valuable in view of Zoom’s business priorities and competition
Manage outside counsel in preparing and prosecuting a large volume of patent applications, including reviewing claims to ensure high quality
Oversee asset tracking, inventor incentive awards, and patent marking for the patent program
Assist with pre-litigation patent assertions and patent litigation as needed
Provide patent counseling as needed in areas such as IP provisions in our agreements and Terms of Service, acquisition due diligence, and patent licensing
Monitor patent decisions, legislation, and policy throughout the world; identify opportunities where Zoom should influence developments
Must haves:
8+ years of experience as a registered patent attorney at a well-respected law firm and technology company
Must have demonstrated strong patent harvesting skills in an in-house environment
Strong U.S. patent preparation and prosecution experience (preferably also having experience with international patent protection)
Strong knowledge of videoconferencing, video, audio, and collaboration technologies
Experience with software patents
Experience with SaaS and other software business models & technologies
Comfortable having a fast-moving and heavy workload, with constantly changing priorities
Demonstrated experience providing practical, actionable advice that balances legal risk and business impact in a dynamic environment
Ability to work autonomously to manage matters from start to finish
Comfortable with distributed work environments, collaborating across time zones and cultures
Team-first attitude
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Strong organizational and process-development skills
Nice to have, but not required:
Patent litigation experience
Patent licensing and due diligence experience
Strong PowerPoint and presentation skills
Located in a West Coast time zone
