Guild, the leading education benefits platform and one of Denver's fastest growing startups, is increasing economic mobility for working adults in America and providing education and support to help every student survive and thrive in the economy of tomorrow. Our platform helps employers offer education as a benefit to their employees by connecting employers' workforces with our network of nonprofit universities and education institutions that focus on serving the needs of working adults. And, our team of retention coaches helps each employee navigate the path back to school, providing individualized support from day one through graduation. In order to accelerate our growth and achieve our mission to serve 1000s more students, we've raised over $70 million from top tier investors including Felicis Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Redpoint Ventures (among other social impact and VC partners!). Now we’re looking to add In-House Counsel to the team.

As our In-House Counsel you’ll have a meaningful impact on the growth and development of our company while working collaboratively with many different team leaders at Guild.

A day in our open, collaborative workspace will look a little like this:

  • Providing proactive and strategic legal and regulatory advice and recommendations based on business priorities and industry context
  • Regularly interfacing with counsel at our partner corporate clients and partner universities
  • Responding to ad hoc requests from Guild team members for product, compliance, or employment counsel
  • Managing our relationships with outside counsel representing venture, contracts, and higher education law

In this role, you’ll grow and expand your expertise by:

  • Getting broad exposure to Guild’s legal matters, with a specific emphasis on corporate contracts, university contracts, general agreements and client partnership specifics as we grow and expand into new relationships across industries with diverse companies
  • Playing an active role in the growth and development of our mission-driven and venture-backed company as a trusted advisor to leadership, client and university partnership teams, finance, HR and others
  • Creating processes and systems that streamline the development, creation, negotiation and approval of legal documents, agreements, and activities

You’ll know if you’re successful by:

  • Receiving feedback through our learning-focused, twice annual Structured Growth Conversations
  • Diplomatically navigating complex situations with diverse audiences both internal to Guild and external (clients, universities, etc.)
  • Responding to urgent or evolving dynamics with expertise, quick research, and thorough and thoughtful counsel

You’ll join a team:

  • From diverse backgrounds – from traditional higher education, to athletic coaches, to politicians, to startup leaders (and more!)
  • Of learners & problem-solvers dedicated to our dual mission of changing education in America while building a successful, high-growth company
  • Committed to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment that you’d support every day

What you’ll add to Guild - as an individual and part of the broader team:

  • A JD and admission to practice law in Colorado
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience to draw upon with the majority of that experience focused on drafting and reviewing SaaS and service agreement contracts
  • Desire to thrive in a startup where there is frequent change, high pressure, and a need to demonstrate and act with a sense of urgency
  • Demonstrated ability to flex your expertise across the diverse legal scenarios you might encounter - sometimes in the course of a single day
  • Ability to quickly learn new legal concepts, such as higher education regulatory provisions, new data security laws, etc…
  • Ability to balance research, risk, and practical applications in partnership with Guild team members or leaders
  • Clear commitment to maintaining exceptional ethical standards and high quality work regardless of the nature of the request
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem solving skills
  • Passion for higher education and our mission - Guild is pioneering a new path for education as a benefit in a complicated and regulated space - success means quickly learning the landscape and effectively adapting your expertise
  • A drive to work hard and a plan for how you can refresh and recharge while working in a startup
  • Something else? Wonderful, we’re curious to learn more about you!
