Intern, Wave Planning Engineer

Eligibility
All internships are paid, full-time work experiences. The Zayo internship program begins on June 7* and formally ends on August 13*, 2021 (*start/end date flexible to academic obligations).
Position Description
The Wave Planning Engineer Intern will be primarily engaged with assisting the Wave Capacity Planning organization with identifying network capacity needs across North America. This opportunity allows the intern to see the inner workings of a tier I service provider, while learning from some of the best engineers in the business. The intern will develop a background in capacity planning, specializing in hardware assets from multiple vendors such as Ciena, Infinera and Nokia. This includes identifying capacity restricted network shelf adds, mux facility installations, spectral analysis, capacity migrations, monitoring/restocking inventory levels, capital budget review, etc. The role is technically oriented and works with multiple internal teams such as architecture, operations, sales and install. The intern will develop analytical skills to decipher network capacity, health and provide cost sensitive resolutions to keep the network in good working order. The ideal candidate is someone that has or is working on a telecommunications degree.
Responsibilities
Work with field technicians to install fiber optic equipment
Work with core engineering team to decipher route spectral analysis and opportunities for network growth
Monitor and purchase inventory
Review capital projects
Initiate shipping orders
Work through large migration projects
Qualifications
Studying/degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Telecom or related major
Previous internship or employment experience in a technical environment a plus
Possess strong organizational and communicative skills, including oral, written, and listening
Familiarity with telecommunications concepts a plus
Proficiency with critical software systems like Google Earth, Microsoft Visio and Google Docs preferred
Eagerness to expand knowledge base in a technical role
