Are you interested in a career in data science and renewable energy? Come join the Grid Solutions team within the Renewables group at UL Solutions and learn about what it takes to develop and deliver solutions to predict and schedule generation from operating renewable energy projects. On the Grid Solutions team, you will work with technical subject matter experts to use artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, programming, and atmospheric science principles to improve upon the cutting edge accuracy of our renewable energy forecasts.
This position will work in a team environment with staff at all levels contributing to the development of innovative, analytical, and high-quality products and services.
We are looking for a highly motivated data scientist intern to become involved with our renewable energy forecasting solutions. The exact work to be performed will depend on the background, skillsets, and interests of each individual, but may include:

We are looking for a highly motivated data scientist intern to become involved with our renewable energy forecasting solutions. The exact work to be performed will depend on the background, skillsets, and interests of each individual, but may include:
- Contribute to the team's use of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence algorithms to improve the accuracy of deterministic and probabilistic renewable energy forecasts on a variety of timescales and under a variety of circumstances
- Use satellite, weather model, and proxy measurement data inputs to optimize the machine learning estimation of generation and meteorological variables when no measurements exist
- Implement and maintain rigorous data quality control processes to ensure the cleanest possible datasets are available to train the artificial intelligence algorithms
- Participate in various stages of the software development lifecycle including supporting new initiatives and enhancing mature products and services
- Other duties as required
Throughout your work, you will contribute to the development of processes to increase work product efficiency and quality, and learn and apply company quality control standards and standard operating procedures.
What makes you a great fit:
- Currently enrolled as a Senior in an undergraduate/graduate program focusing on data science, computer science, physical/atmospheric sciences, engineering, or related science/technology discipline
- Advanced programming skills in one or more programming languages; experience in Python is preferred
- Experience with multiple aspects of the data science lifecycle as applied to physical science or engineering problems, such as data mining/cleaning, feature engineering, predictive modeling, and data visualization
- Experience using a code repository management platform such as Bitbucket or GitLab a plus
- Skilled written and verbal communicator
- Ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment

- Total Rewards: The hourly range for this position is $26.25-30.25/hour.
