How you'll make an impact
You will be managing engineers in one or more product teams, driving a culture of professional development, performance and open communication. You will be responsible for supporting your direct reports in becoming awesome Xeros - empowering them to deliver high-quality software to customers, hone their engineering skills, and foster the growth of a world-class engineering culture.
You'll also work alongside Product Management and fellow People Leads to drive Engineering team initiatives to enable the success of the group as a whole. Your role can be summarized by 'you do what is needed for your reports to be successful in their pods'.
What you'll do

    • Engage with Xero's product teams to build close relationships and ways of working together.
    • Assist with implementing and customizing engineering practices that are appropriate at Xero. For example: Service Level Objectives and Auto Remediation Processes.
    • Assist with the development of an engineering culture where team members have the skills and desire to write automation, monitoring and backup/restore code.
    • Manage a high performing team of engineers including career development and ongoing training.
    • Attracting, recruiting and retaining capable individuals, building on and complementing the diversity of our team
    • Championing and driving processes and practices that makes it possible for engineers to get great work done, while promoting a safe environment for people to experiment and learn
    • Role-modeling exemplary leadership, supporting and growing the next generation of engineering leaders at Xero.


Success looks like

    • A product team that is well connected to other product teams and driving incremental improvement in their product.
    • Software developed by your team members complies with Xero's formal and informal development standards and architectural guidelines; and exceptions to those are carefully considered and well understood.
    • Your teams work effectively and efficiently with a continuous improvement mind-set.
    • Accurate and timely information is provided to Product Owners, Product Managers and other stakeholders to enable them to set timeframes and/or scope expectations
    • Your direct reports are effectively managed and supported. Their performance is reviewed regularly, and feedback is continually provided in a timely manner.
    • All engineers are empowered and challenged to do their best work. The right people are solving the right problems and their skills are continuously being developed through new learning and experimentation.
    • There is opportunity for all engineers to grow at Xero. All direct reports should be helped to understand their personal career path and be encouraged to excel towards it.
    • Good performance is recognized and celebrated. Poor performance is managed promptly and effectively.
    • All engineers are motivated and engaged: staff morale and staff retention is high.

We are committed to transparency and to equal pay for equal work. Total compensation for this role includes a base salary of $130,000 - 152,000, commensurate with experience.
