who we are

Flytedesk powers media and advertising on college campuses. We build the technology that college media organizations and universities use to manage their operations. We build the technology that small businesses use to reach students. We work with brands, campaigns, and causes as their college partner in understanding, reaching, and driving outcomes with students.

We have a presence at almost every college in the country and the ability to reach 20 million students through campus billboards, student influencers, campus email newsletters, college newspapers, digital ads, SMS, and more.

We started flytedesk as the tool we needed at our college newspapers and have grown to become the single largest funding source for student journalism. Brick by brick, we’re creating a sustainable business model for college media by providing a coveted service to advertisers. We’re mission-driven, profitable, newly remote, and unrelenting in pushing our business and customers forward.

who you are

A sustainable business model for college media means a better financial model for college media. As we’ve focused on finding product/market fit and driving revenue, we’ve left some financial process debt in our wake. We have multiple revenue streams, complex cash receipts, and dynamic agreements with our customers. Nothing crazy, but it’s key to solve as we scale. In short, this is a startup!

We have two main sources of revenue. The flytedesk “OS” is our ad management software for college media organizations and universities. We make money by charging a monthly fee (it’s a SaaS business within our business.) It also has a feature that processes credit card payments on their behalf, which can get complex because of higher ed red tape. We’re looking for a strategic thinker who can help build a path to scale.

Our main revenue stream is our national sales business where we craft campaigns with all sorts of different advertisers (fortune 500 brands, political campaigns, non-profits, and media agencies of all sizes.) We’re looking for someone that can manage complex AP/AR in their sleep and keep the books sparkling clean. We can outsource this or hire for it in the near-term, but you have to be able to do it yourself.

Have we scared you off yet? This role will no doubt be challenging but getting the model right and watching it scale will be immensely gratifying. (So we hear, and hope!)

We’re looking for someone highly collaborative that sees the realities of the business as their playing field, not something to shy away from. Not only will the right person be great at the fundamentals and the business-building elements of the job – they’ll also be stellar in the financial management of the company itself. That means budgeting, forecasting, and board-level reporting. Again, since this is a startup we’re looking for someone that can provide day-to-day oversight of HR and serve as a liaison to our law firms.

Come help us take a great business to the next level!

responsibilities

Financial Management: We’ve been broke before. We know what it looks like, we know what it feels like… we’re not fans. We’ve worked incredibly hard to go from ‘startup just trying to figure it out’ to ‘startup that has had a lot of success and needs to invest in improving on the stuff that’s made us successful’. But we’re still a startup and we’ll probably be scrappy all the way till the end. We expect you to be a true steward of capital: owning budgets, projections, and models. You very likely have done this at a startup before, but also have experience doing it at much larger companies.

Accounting: In the short term, you’ll manage all AP/AR across all revenue streams. We’ll ask you to audit and improve current processes, manage Quickbooks, etc. We have a fractional CFO and book-keeping firm, and you’ll come in and own those relationships. You should have a really solid accounting foundation and be able to hire a team in the future.

Startup Finance: What is startup finance? It’s all the stuff you probably wouldn’t have anything to do with at a bigger company but that you’ll own here. Insurance, filing taxes, HR (including onboarding and offboarding), payroll, setting up a 401(k), legal liaison… and anything else that comes up that you can take on. You won’t do this forever but we need someone knowledgeable, trustworthy, and independent that can keep these trains running till we hire more folks onto the team.
