About Boom Supersonic
Boom Supersonic is the Denver-based startup building Mach-2.2 passenger airliners. Think Concorde but 75% more affordable to fly. Imagine a day trip from New York to London—3h15 each way. Fly to London for a business meeting and be home in time to tuck your children into bed. Boom’s first prototype takes flight in late 2019.
Boom’s outstanding team comes from places like Amazon, SpaceX, Scaled Composites, and Virgin Galactic. Team members have collectively contributed to 40+ new air and space vehicles, including the Falcon 9, Virgin SpaceShipTwo, and the Joint Strike Fighter.
The company is backed by venture capital firms including Emerson Collective, Y Combinator, Caffeinated Capital, and SV Angel as well as individuals including Sam Altman, Paul Graham, Ron Conway, Michael Marks, and Greg McAdoo.
At Boom, you’ll have world-class colleagues and a flexible work environment. We don’t punch a clock, offer unmetered vacation time, and value our employees’ comprehensive well-being.
Are you passionate about building the future of transportation? Help us make aviation history.
Role Overview
Boom is building a world-class accounting & finance team to support its mission of restoring supersonic commercial flight. We are looking for a highly motivated Staff Accountant to join our growing team.
Your primary responsibilities will be: owner of general journal entries in Boom’s accounting system; responsible for accounts payable, payroll processing, and cash reconciliations; play a key role in the month-end close process and manage various asset and liability account reconciliations; design & implement new accounting procedures and processes that don’t exist today; assist with technical accounting research whenever necessary, support internal controls improvements, and other ad hoc projects.
You should have exceptional operational accounting skills, and not afraid to “own the general ledger”. You will be the “go-to” person for all things general ledger. You should be confident working in other systems too (payroll processing, a PO system, expense management system), and understand how those impact the GL. You should also be confident in making recommendations on accounting improvements, and willing to own & implement. You will need to work cross-functional with other teams, particularly through a good understanding of POs, budget ownership, and expense categorization. You should also be comfortable working independently at times.
Working in a startup environment means taking on unexpected responsibilities and attempting tasks that no one in the company knows how to do. The successful candidate has a resourceful, can-do approach to these demands and enjoys the continuous learning curve of a startup.
The Staff Accountant will report to the Accounting Manager and will be a member of Boom’s growing accounting & finance team.

Key Competencies

  • Sound understanding of US GAAP and general ledger / month-end processes.
  • Understanding of internal controls and "best practice" processes
  • Proficient in Microsoft products, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Strong communication skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work in an unstructured environment and desire to build things
  • Support the Accounting Manager while also owning individual responsibilities

  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance
  • 1-3 years accounting experience
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing or aerospace business is a plus but not required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and experience with cloud GL software (Xero, NetSuite, etc.) is a plus

To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations (ITAR and EAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. An Insider's view of Boom Supersonic

What’s the vibe like in the office?

The high quality team at Boom is what really sets the vibe for the office. I’ve never worked with so many smart, talented, and passionate people. The best part though, is the incredibly collaborative approach that the entire team takes to solving problems and building a product. There is no “stay out of my sandbox” mentality.

Lead Engineer, Flight Controls

What kinds of technical challenges do you and your team face?

New technical challenges arise daily with solutions fueled by motivated engineers. Talented and energetic employees are the norm, many of them early in their careers, all of whom are eager to learn, willing to think differently, get their hands dirty, and work together to send supersonic aircraft screaming through the sky.

Principal Stress Analyst

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

Prior to starting at Boom, I worked at a global OEM. What I love most about this company is its focus on cross-collaboration, and how all the departments work together as a true, interdisciplinary team. Learning new things each day from innovative, inspiring coworkers has helped transform me into a better, more diverse engineer.

Materials & Process Engineer

What’s the vibe like in the office?

The vibe around the facility is a night and day experience compared to the aviation site I used to work at. Everyone from the CEO on down is hyper approachable seemingly every day. Here at Boom, we believe in hard work. We also believe in the concept of having a life outside of the good work we do here.
