POSITION SUMMARY:

The Revenue Accountant will report to the VP Finance and Accounting and play a key role in researching, documenting, and tracking customer contract revenue accounting in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This position will work collaboratively with the Sales, Legal, and Operations teams on proactively determining the appropriate customer contract revenue language and understanding the revenue impacts in advance of contract execution. The Revenue Accountant also will work closely with the Financial Planning and Analysis team on forecasting revenue from customer contracts, and with the external accountants on their audit of customer contract revenue and the underlying documentation and supporting detail.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews complex revenue contracts and documents applicable revenue recognition methodology and impacts
  • Reviews draft sales arrangements, and proposes edits to draft language to ensure proper revenue recognition in accordance with company policy and U.S. GAAP revenue recognition accounting standards, particularly, as applicable Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 606
  • Ensures invoices comply with the Company’s revenue recognition policies and procedures
  • Documents and maintains customer contacts and develops positive working relationships with project managers regarding project tracking and other documentation in support of monthly revenue recognition
  • Maintains integrity of data entered in accounting system through procedural guidelines
  • Interfaces with multiple departments including sales staff, project managers, and management
  • Supports a contract review mechanism pertaining to accurate and complete billing, appropriate revenue recognition, as well as other contract terms impacting the revenue cycle
  • Ensures contract compliance related to the invoicing process, ensuring deferred revenue, revenue, unbilled AR, and AR have been appropriately scheduled in accounting system, and invoicing is aligned with terms of agreements
  • Reviews and creates revenue recognition schedules in the accounting system
  • Facilitates the proper recording of monthly revenue transactions to recognize revenue in accordance with GAAP, including authoritative guidance on revenue recognition, accruals and sub-ledger to general ledger
  • Assists with month-end close, quarterly reviews and annual audits for multiple departments including Accounting, Sales, Clinical Operations, and Executive Management
  • This position may eventually include managing 1-2 direct reports.

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years’ accounting and auditing experience with an emphasis on revenue recognition
  • Strong familiarity with ASC 606, Revenue from Contracts with Customer
  • Ability to research complex accounting concepts and stay up-to-date with revenue recognition trends
  • Contract review, negotiation and compliance experience
  • Sound knowledge of GAAP and internal control procedures
  • Excellent analytical and spreadsheet skills, report and management dashboard reporting experience
  • Strong technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to drive process changes and improvement
  • Must be extremely organized
  • Professional, detailed oriented, flexible and outgoing
  • Strong software applications and data management skills; ability to learn new software systems and tools
  • ERP system implementation and migration experience is desired
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
  • Solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and financial and managerial accounting concepts including, but not limited to cash flows, revenue recognition, expense allocation, and accrual methods
  • Ability to work independently and balance multiple projects and processes
  • Strong business partnering and interpersonal skills across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to lead projects

EDUCATION:

  • Certified Public Accountant with Big 4 experience in the life sciences industry required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; Master’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration desired
