About the job:

We have a current opening for an independent contractor (1099) in the role of Controller, who has experience with Public Entity Filings in the US and Canada.  We offer a flexible work from home schedule with local guidance and continued opportunities to expand your knowledge and skillset in our specialized sectors.

 

Basic Function: 

The Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the company, including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with US GAAP.  This is an outstanding opportunity for an accounting professional with operational experience and a proven track record of creative problem-solving and working in a rapidly scaling company. 

 

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Researching technical accounting issues for compliance and implement operational systems for resolution
  • Contributing to a culture of fiscal responsibility infused with creative problem solving
  • Recommending benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
  • Coordinating and directing the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances
  • Providing financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
    Leading the design and build of automated systems and processes to achieve scale
  • Directly or indirectly working with C-level executives of the client companies
  • Stretching yourself professionally by jumping into unfamiliar territory whenever necessary
  • Participating in regularly scheduled meetings with members of the FE staff
  • Collaborating in the resolution of business issues to propel the organization forward
  • Joining a team of like-minded and experienced professionals intent upon flawless execution
  • Leading by example to provide value to the clients we serve
  • Communicating and sharing best practices to aid in continuous improvement of the team
  • Participating in periodic performance reviews to provide constructive and developmental feedback
  • Providing valuable insights to help improve the general operations of Focused Energy
  • Meeting deadlines and delivering work that is completed in a thorough and professional manner
  • Analyzing company's financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs and compliance with budgets
  • Potentially serving as a Client Lead on a project, managing a team of controllers and/or accounting associates

 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, Revenue Recognition, and Reconciliations, ensuring they are completed timely.
    • Review income statement for proper recording and allocations to ensure the financials and trial balance are accurate and complete
    • Oversee timely and accurate month-end and year-end close process
    • Manage preparation of timely monthly financial statements
    • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
    • Manage the preparation of regulatory reporting, both internal and external
    • Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
    • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
    • Meet clients in the Denver Areas in person on periodic basis or as necessary
    • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
    • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
       

Required Qualifications: 

  • Proven working experience as a Financial Controller
    • 10+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience
    • Advanced degree in Finance and/or Accounting
    • CPA or CMA preferred
    • Experience with or exposure to the following systems:
      • Excel 
      • QuickBooks Online
      • Bill.com
      • Xero
    • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures and US GAAP
    • Extensive experience with creating financial statements
    • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management and communication skills
    • Experience with SaaS companies is a plus
    • Self-motivation, integrity, and ethical mindset
    • Humility, open mind, and sense of humor
    • A mind that thinks beyond the tactical activity to see the business impact
    • Ability to work in a self directed manner
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and assignments in order to meet timelines and critical delivery dates
    • Comply with standard operating procedures as defined by Focused Energy in order to ensure consistency, predictability and simplicity
    • Experience working and managing team members remotely
    • Experience working in a growing startup environment strongly preferred
    • Proven ability to lead a team in a fast-paced, project-oriented environment
    • Strong communication skills and collaboration with team members, cross-functional departments and senior leadership
