About the position
This position reports to the Assistant Controller. The Payroll Manager will manage the payroll functions, ensuring pay is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations. Our ideal candidate is analytical, methodical, and organized with experience in payroll administration and knowledge of payroll regulations. We also value integrity, team spirit and strong communication skills. The goal is to ensure our payroll procedures are compliant, efficient, and current. This position will also work closely with our Stock Administration, HR, Tax and Legal.
REPORTS TO: Chief Accounting Officer and Controller
Position responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day payroll activities and serve as subject matter expert for payroll.
- Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
- Maintain a complete understanding of all federal/state wage and hour laws related to payroll including garnishments, benefits, leave of absence, 401k, FSA, and taxes.
- Prepare and reconcile payroll-related journal entries and reconciliations against the general ledger for month-end close.
- Maintain accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
- Process worker’s compensation semi-monthly and conduct an annual audit upon request.
- Manage and oversee the 401K audit and ensure our compliance with the Form 5500
- Manage statutory tax withholding requirements and ensure that all payroll taxes are calculated and paid on time. Review all payroll reporting and provide accurate and timely filing with appropriate government authorities.
- Document and revise the payroll procedures. Identify and recommend updates to payroll processing, software, and systems. Manage payroll streamline process improvement and ensure compliance with SOX requirements.
- Research and understand the applicability of new rules, tax codes, or relevant legislation pertaining to payroll.
- Support external and internal financial audit
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with 8+ years of payroll experience at a high-growth tech company.
Expertise & experience
- Strong know-how of accounting, legal, and tax implications is required.
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) highly preferred.
- Experience running payroll for 200+ employees in different U.S. States, with expert knowledge of multi-state payroll, payroll tax rules and regulations in the US.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet time sensitive deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with superior attention to detail.
- Proficient with payroll software and Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
