As part of this growing team, ShapeShift is looking to hire the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on the Executive Team.

POSITION OVERVIEW

ShapeShift is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to supervise the finance unit of the business and strategically lead all financial operations, financing activities (incl. fundraising), planning, tactical execution, and reporting for the organization.

The CFO is responsible for leading multiple financial departments, including Accounting, Treasury Management & the Controller function, Trading, Reporting, and Financial Operations across both crypto and fiat financial assets and systems. The CFO will develop and own financial strategy, budgeting, metrics, systems integration, audit and reporting, financial compliance, fundraising, and interfacing with external service providers including banks, exchanges, and other financial institutions.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate financial mastery in the traditional fiat setting, as well as a proficiency in trading systems, quantitative and qualitative financial analysis, and blockchain, crypto, and digital asset technology. The ideal candidate for the position will have prior CFO experience in a large ($50 MM revenue +), high growth, entrepreneurial company and will have managed all aspects of the finance function. Prior experience in finance and accounting positions in larger organizations is also a plus, as is experience working closely with private investors, including completing an exit, either through M&A or an initial public offering.

This is a full-time position based in Denver, Colorado and reports to the Chief Executive Officer, Erik Voorhees.

GOALS OF POSITION

  • Build and manage a team to assure execution of department goals and KPIs
  • Ensures that the organization remains in strong fiscal health
  • Own the financial performance of the organization and prepare all related financial statements and reports including, but not limited to the Balance Sheet, Income and Cash Flow Statement, and Budget
  • Ensures that the Finance Department maintains all financial records and systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and effectively monitors and implement systems to control and safeguard the funds and financial assets of the organization

SUCCESS METRICS OF POSITION

  • Provides leadership, direction, oversight and training of the Finance Department team
  • Implementation of a risk assessment plan with input from the CEO, the Board and the senior leadership team which includes the appropriate metrics to document financials and other operational risks to the organization
  • Define and implement Company's Financial Metrics for senior leadership team and Board of Directors
  • Implementation of Finance Department’s maintenance of financial records and systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and effectively monitors and implement systems to control and safeguard the funds and financial assets of the organization

JOB DUTIES:

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

  • Provides significant financial leadership helping to guide and shape the organization's financial strategy and plans to support its future growth
  • Foster relationships with exchanges, banks, accounting firms, auditors, and other external service providers
  • Assist in strategic planning of company initiatives
  • Work together with CEO to lead fundraising initiatives
  • Manages an investment portfolio that provides liquidity and safety while optimizing earnings
  • Makes recommendations for investing excess cash or inventory. Keeps CEO apprised of cash position and investment opportunities.
  • Develops and implements a risk assessment plan with input from the CEO, the Board and the senior leadership team which includes the appropriate metrics to document financials and other operational risks to the organization.
  • Ensures that a disaster recovery and contingency plan is in place for the organization
  • Engages the Board's Audit and Finance Committee with respect to financial trends and significant changes in operations impacting the finances of the organization
  • Participates in on-going strategic planning with the CEO, Board of Directors and senior leadership team

FINANCIAL AND OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT

  • Oversees the financial performance of the organization and prepares all related financial statements and reports including, but not limited to the Balance Sheet, Statement of Activities, Cash Flow and Budget
  • Variance Report for review and consideration by the CEO and Board of Directors
  • Oversees the organization's budget, including implementation of all projects and prepares metric reports to account for the fiscal performance of all contracted programs and the various services and operations
  • Ensures that the Finance Department maintains all financial records and systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and effectively monitors and implement systems to control and safeguard the funds and financial assets of the organization
  • Oversees the preparation and submittal of financial reports to all City, State and Federal government agencies
  • Manages cash flow and cash flow forecasting for the organization and interfaces with banks to monitor all cash balances
  • Provides support to various members of the Board in monitoring investments of the organization
  • Oversees all administrative and financial reporting in connection with the organization's Retirement Plan and other insurance plans including, Health, Disability and Worker's Compensation
  • Oversees all General Accounting operations including, the General Ledger, Trial Balance, Payroll, Accounts Payable and Account Receivable functions
  • Reviews all finance/administrative, payroll and IT related policies, procedures and systems and makes recommendations for procedural controls, workflow and process improvements
  • Prepares and monitors the Balance Sheet and all revenue, and expense accounts
  • Analyzes and distributes monthly financial statements to department heads; communicates trends and deviations, and implements corrective action plans if necessary
  • Provides Chair of Finance Committee with quarterly dashboards highlighting P&L consolidated and program data, balance sheet data and comparison metrics to prior year
  • Attends all Board and Board Subcommittee meetings including serving as lead staff person supporting the activities of the Audit and Finance Committee
  • Assists/completes other projects as assigned by CEO
  • Manages tracking and reporting of foundational SEC, FinCen, CFTC, IRS rules governing alternative assets and their use and transfer

TEAM MANAGEMENT

  • Provides leadership, direction, oversight and training of the Finance Department team
  • Partners and engages with members of the senior leadership team and Department Managers to provide financial and budgetary support related to their respective program areas
  • Works closely with the Chief of Staff and other administrative staff to coordinate activities and functions including, but not limited to payroll and benefits admin

INDUSTRY SPECIFIC

  • Oversee the company’s transaction flows and trading activity across hot and cold wallets as well as exchanges and banks
  • Experience with ASC 606 revenue recognition principle and its effect on alternative assets
  • Passionate about innovations in accounting achieved through a tokenized ledger system (example: triple-entry accounting)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED EDUCATION | EXPERIENCE

  • Strong academic credentials required; an MBA is strongly preferred and a CPA is also a plus
  • Minimum of ten (10) years' experience in finance, preferably in a FinTech or Financial Company Setting, of which at least seven (7) years were in a senior financial leadership role with overall responsibility for the fiscal affairs of an organization and a team of accounting professionals
  • Navigated company growth from startup employee base to growth stage scaling workforce
  • Financial leadership within an organization of at least $50mm annual revenue
  • Prior experience working with independent auditing/accounting firms and reporting financial performance and results to a Board of Directors
  • Intimate knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices and standards
  • Direct experience working with automated financial software systems (NetSuite)

REQUIRED TRAVEL

Travel as required. Likely at least 5-10 domestic trips, and 2-5 international trips per year.
