Windows Principal Software Engineer – Performance

Our VMWare+Carbon Black team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer with kernel-level programming knowledge and strong analytical skills to focus on performance.  You’ll solve complex software problems by utilizing performance tools to measure and capture diagnostics and then analyze the data to implement solutions that will ensure products perform fast and efficiently. You’ll be part of an engineering team as a leader in the performance space.  You will be an integral part of designing solutions because you will ensure features are built with performance in mind.  You will find ways to measure performance every step of the way and work with QA to ensure automated performance testing is built in key areas of the product.  If you love computer security and digging into complex engineering challenges in the performance space, then we want you on our team!

 

What You'll Bring

 

    • BS degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar

    • 7+ years of experience as a Software Engineer with an emphasis on Object-Oriented C++ development.

    • 5 years experience with user-space and Windows kernel/ system-level development.

    • Expert knowledge of C++ is required.

    • Expert knowledge of debugging and crash dump analysis in Windbg

    • Experience with tools like Process Monitor, PC Benchmark, and Windows Performance Analyzer

    • Ability to contribute in all areas of the software development process, including software design, new-feature development, testing, debugging/problem diagnosis, and quality.

    • Comfortable working with complex, mission-critical systems.

    • Fluency in approaches to security, concurrency, debugging, performance, scalability, supportability and quality.

    • Strong demonstrable track record of technical curiosity and technical flexibility/agility.

    • A team-first attitude. We’re a team where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts 

    • Experience with code management and bug tracking tools

 

What You'll Do

 

    • Leverage C++ programming experience to drive performance enhancements on the Windows endpoint for the VMware Carbon Black Cloud Security product 

    • Utilize industry-standard performance tools to focus on product performance. 

    • Communicate clearly and effectively with internal stakeholders to drive resolution of technical issues, especially in the performance space.

    • Be proactive, self-motivated and attentive to detail when solving highly complex, escalated problems

    • Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis of product performance issues

    • Contribute to product direction by leading design discussions and collaborating with team architects, product management, endpoint, backend, and front-end engineers to deliver the right solution

    • Plan and schedule work and tasks across multiple features, manage dependencies, change and risk. 

    • Provide technical supervision and mentoring of one or more engineers. 

    • Recommend new features, technologies, tools, process improvements. 

    • Deliver technical training and training materials for other functional organizations in the company. 

    • Proactively identify potential pitfalls in proposed software designs

    • Continuously improve customer experience, quality, performance, and stability of the existing products

    • Contribute to code reviews and give constructive, high-quality feedback.

    • Participate in Agile development processes and become a true team citizen.

 

Bonus points for:

 

  • Experience with Agile, Docker, Git, Jenkins, Continuous Integration, TDD

  • Experience with distributed enterprise level applications (client/server)

  • Experience with network security,  and general familiarity with software security concepts, challenges, and paradigms a strong plus
