A Mission to Reshape Science

Breakthrough discoveries once occurred by happenstance, like when scientists like Alexander Fleming noticed the halo of dead bacteria surrounding a mold colony. But today's breakthroughs often go unnoticed because they are buried in uninterpretable spreadsheets, inaccessible data, or excessive experimental noise. Riffyn’s mission is to unlock the full potential of today’s science by delivering data that is clean, connected, and meaningful from the moment it is collected.

The Role

Riffyn is looking for a senior front-end engineer to lead the effort to build the next version of our user interface. You will build intuitive experiences for scientists and engineers in life sciences and biotechnology to capture and understand their data, to better their research and discover more.

We've built a great app that delivers on its promises and really helps our users get their work done. But, we need it to scale ... in number of users, in amount of data, in size of our team, and in number of new features. To do this, we intend to rewrite our front-end to use the latest and greatest from React, and you will be a big part of making that happen.

Our current application had been built with JavaScript and Python with Meteor, React, Node.js, MongoDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch and is hosted on AWS. (For this role, you only need experience in JavaScript and React.) We're currently experimenting with other technologies to reduce our dependence on Meteor.

You have

  • Built complex user interfaces several times over, most recently with React
  • Been part of a rewrite team, or a major refactoring effort
  • Acted in a tech lead role before—formally or informally—and can talk about how to do so effectively

You should

  • Make everything "as simple as possible, but no simpler", and be able to explain it
  • Take an interest in mentoring other developers and building their skills

We offer

  • Interesting data problems—scientists measure a lot!
  • Room to experiment and find the best solution
  • Opportunity to establish Riffyn's best practices for years to come
  • Genuinely nice people to work with on a day-to-day basis
  • Dedicated budget for continuing education and the time off to use it

Riffyn is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Experienced developers from non-traditional backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The base salary range for this position is $130k-150k.
