How you'll make an impact
- You’ll contribute to the long term technical vision of Xero and assist our teams to bring that vision to life. Your guidance will give teams clarity of direction, and confidence to deliver high-quality products
- You’ll bridge between worlds - building and maintaining relationships with product stakeholders, engineering teams, operations and leadership, enabling the business to optimize for global scale. You'll improve the cohesion of Xero’s systems – people, technologies and processes. Through sound architecture practices, you’ll balance long-term evolvability and scalability with current needs
- You’ll help to integrate the pieces into a #beautiful whole, orchestrating our internal systems and third party software solutions to deliver great customer outcomes
- You’ll provide just enough technical governance, ensuring teams have appropriate architectural guardrails for their work
Success looks like
- An architecture vision is in place for the product and any requirements or capabilities needed to achieve the vision have been documented
- Teams understand why their work matters, and are invested in realising the architecture vision
- Architecturally significant decisions are made in consultation with key stakeholders in the portfolio, in a timely manner
- Local solutions are aligned with Xero's global best practices and principles
- Guidelines, patterns and practices are in place and continually improved
- Solutions are able to evolve over time to meet new business needs, without significant rework
- Teams are empowered with an appropriate level of delegated technical decision making
- Solutions achieve compliance with relevant regulations and security standards.
Assignment Brief
- This role is primarily focused on delivering compliant tax solutions in the northern hemisphere and contributing global tax services that can be leveraged to deliver tax solutions to all markets
- Architect solutions to support Xero’s integration with the UK government's MTD initiative
- Architect solutions to deliver Tax solutions in North America aligned to the Xero strategy and market opportunities
- Support M&A projects in the regions with your architecture experience identifying and mitigating technical risks, collaborating with project teams to evaluate opportunities and leading the technical teams through due diligence
- Support architecture decisions and guiding delivery teams based in North America and UK to deliver solutions that advance the architecture principles of Xero
- Architect tax solutions that integrate seamlessly into the wider Xero architecture
- Ensure tax domains and boundaries are well defined and understood by the team and as Xero evolves maintain these definitions resolving boundary conflict to ensure an efficient overall architecture
- Contribute to the architect community bringing your experience and passion to discussions and advancement of the Xero Architecture Practice
What you'll bring with you
- Visual communication - the ability to describe physical and logical architectures, sequences and system interactions
- Ability to define and measure non-functional requirements, such as reliability, availability, security and performance
- Business Analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to evaluate technologies and articulate trade-offs
- Demonstrated experience conceptualizing and implement large-scale web-based services
- Working knowledge of distributed systems and enterprise integration patterns
- Working knowledge of AWS services, including EC2, SQS, DynamoDB, and Lambda
- Experience building and evolving REST APIsFamiliarity with information security vulnerabilities and risk management
- Familiarity with consumer privacy and payments industry compliance requirements (e.g GDPR and PCI)

Total compensation for this role includes a base salary of $140k-$188k, commensurate with experience, plus an annual grant of Xero shares, calculated as a percentage of base salary
