Software Engineer, Product Infrastructure
Product Infrastructure at Gusto is a small but growing engineering team that empowers the 100+ engineers at Gusto. Gusto product engineers move tens of billions of our customers’ dollars every year and the Product Infrastructure team helps them work quickly, securely, and enjoyably.
Infrastructure contains many disciplines and you can focus on the one(s) that best fit you. Your teammates will have complimentary skills and you’ll teach and learn from each other.
Build and Release Engineering
Product Infrastructure builds our continuous integration, artifact building, and deployment mechanisms. We support Gusto engineers at every step of the software lifecycle.
You’ll work on (and learn) static analysis and linting, automated test suite management, online database migration, deployment, monitoring, and anything else your team builds for product developers.
Shared Product Services
Every product team needs to read user data, send emails, and perform other core product operations. The Product Infrastructure team creates Gusto-specific product components that are shared across all products. We extract and refactor the things every product engineer needs and we offer them behind a usable API in highly-available services. We’re just starting this work so you can make a huge impact. We have a few veterans who’ve done this at other companies to guide you and teach you how to be great at this.
Security Infrastructure
At Gusto we believe security is accomplished by keeping things simple. The secure way for an employee to do their work should also be the most convenient. Product Infrastructure makes tools that protect the personal data of 60,000+ small businesses and their employees. You don’t need a security background to contribute to this work, you mostly just need good taste. We’ll teach you the cryptography right when you need it.
Here’s what you’ll do (and we’ll support you so you’re great at it):
- Iterating on our many internal apps that help developers migrate data, test features, and deploy safely
- Helping our engineering team maintain high code quality by providing custom linters and static analysis tools
- Building our next-generation continuous delivery system
- Giving back to the global software community with open-source contributions, blog posts, and conference talks. Gusto actively encourages you to build your career here
- Contributing to our in-house CI system, responsible for running many types of automated tests, for many services, across hundreds of EC2 instances, thousands of times per day
- Collaborating with our Platform Infrastructure Engineering team (the folks who handle our cloud architecture) to integrate new deployment mechanisms (Docker, Kubernetes) into our stack.
You'll know you're a good fit for this role if you have:
- At least one year in a full-time software development role. Any language, any context. The more experience you have the stronger you’ll be at this work (some of your friendly teammates will be very senior) but if we had to pick a diligent learner or an industry veteran we’d pick the learner.
- Interest in at least one of the following: Ruby, Go, Terraform/AWS, Javascript, React/Apollo, shell scripting, relational databases, unnecessary animated gifs, service oriented architecture, continuous integration, deployment, refactoring complex systems.
- The willingness to learn at full speed and do the best work of your career alongside people doing the same.
