The company

Outrider, the pioneer in autonomous yard operations for logistics hubs, helps large enterprises improve safety, increase efficiency, and optimize their workforce. The only company exclusively focused on automating all aspects of yard operations, Outrider eliminates manual tasks that are hazardous and repetitive. Outrider’s mission is to drive the rapid adoption of sustainable freight transportation by deploying zero-emission systems. Outrider is a private company backed by NEA, 8VC, and other top-tier investors.

The role

The Simulation Modeling Engineer will report to the Sr. Director of AV Planning and Strategy and serve as a key contributor to Outrider teams involved in product development and deployment of our technology at distribution centers.

This role requires a background in simulation modeling, industrial engineering, computer science and/or statistics. Willingness to travel to customer sites around the country to understand real-world technology environments and help to gather inputs for modeling is also required.

Experience in simulation modeling for logistics applications using AnyLogic or equivalent software, statistical analysis, project management, customer-facing roles, and/or familiarity with logistics tools such as warehouse management systems (WMS) and yard management systems (YMS) is strongly preferred.

The ideal candidate will also embrace our goal to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission, self-driving vehicle systems and help us realize our potential to define, build, and lead a new category of robotic automation for Fortune 500 customers.

Duties and Responsiblities

    • Use off-the-shelf software (e.g. AnyLogic) to develop simulation models incorporating actual distribution-center site layouts and operational data such as traffic flow, throughput and velocity
    • Customize off-the-shelf simulation modeling software as needed to align simulation models with actual site layouts and operations
    • Assist Outrider site planning team to determine and generate appropriate simulation inputs and outputs
    • Apply techniques from statistical / delta analysis, machine learning, etc. to improve the quality and efficiency of simulation modeling
    • Perform validation, feasibility and optimization studies for site-specific technology deployments
    • Report on simulation modeling processes and results to company and customer teams verbally and through written materials and slide presentations
    • Run simulation model for Outrider management, staff and customers, and explain the variable components of the model and how it functions for specific applications
    • Contribute insights from simulation modeling to inform product development and deployment

Ideal personal attributes

    • Self starter ability to work independently with overall and specific goals and objectives
    • Ability to work in a team environment and provide regular feedback
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to work with customers at multiple levels to both collect relevant data and communicate simulation model results
    • Can-do attitude and ability to problem solve and provide innovative solutions

Duties and responsibilities

    • BS in statistics, operations research, industrial engineering, computer science or related field
    • 2+ years of experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Familiarity with simulation (e.g., FlexSim, Anylogic, ARENA) and optimization (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, AIMMS) tools
    • Experience with modeling techniques and approaches, such as operations/movement modeling; probabilistic modeling and Monte-Carlo simulations; agent-based, discrete event and system dynamics modeling
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills
    • Knowledge of labor management systems
    • Familiarity with logistics software such as yard management systems (YMS) and warehouse management systems (WMS)
    • Ease with communicating at the technical and senior executive level
    • Ability to balance multiple competing priorities and projects and a track record of timely delivery of work product
    • Ability to construct facility layouts using AutoCAD (or similar drafting tool)
