About the Department

SparkFun's Software Development and Information Technology department is responsible for the continuous development of all SparkFun web properties and internal tools. This includes all public web properties (e-commerce, forums) and SparkFun’s custom-built ERP system, which manages website content, order processing, customer management, inventory controls and manufacturing operations.  

The department focuses on team collaboration and success, utilizing an Agile Scrum methodology to develop and deploy functionality in a highly cooperative, communicative and transparent manner.

SparkFun's Next IT Systems Administrator

SparkFun is looking to add an IT Systems Administrator to our IT team, to help in the design, maintenance, and operation of our systems infrastructure. This position focused on network operations and Linux administration, supporting our IT infrastructure at our headquarters building, as well as our internal application infrastructure on AWS.

Focusing on success, this position helps design, select and deploy industry standard systems and software that are resilient, end-user friendly and required minimal long-term maintenance.

The right candidate collaborative works with fellow team members and internal customers to find solutions to IT infrastructure needs. As issues arise, the candidate works cooperatively to identify and correct the issue, ensuring progress is communicated to the team.

This position is not a Windows Administrator role, but knowledge of Windows is a plus.

Essential Job Functions

  • Help in the design, deploy, and maintain the infrastructure for SparkFun’s internal and external cloud systems.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and response for systems using monitoring and alerting tools.
  • Perform system troubleshooting efforts: identify issues, develop corrective actions, and deploy fixes.
  • Perform Linux administration tasks
  • Participates in an on-call rotation with other team members
  • Support backup and disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Support systems security measures and deployments

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency administering Linux-based systems
  • Experience in network design and topology, administration, and routing
  • Experience and knowledge of cloud-based infrastructures. Knowledge of AWS a plus
  • Experience with enterprise configuration management software
  • Experience in administrating common enterprise systems, including relational databases, caching systems and
  • NoSQL data stores.
  • Experience in the deployment and operation of common system services (i.e. DHCP, DNS, LDAP, SNMP…etc).
  • 3+ years of systems development and operation experience
  • A “Team First” attitude, putting team needs ahead of individual tasks
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Additional Qualifications

  • Proficiency with scripting tools and languages (sh/bash, Python, Perl)
  • Experience with VPN deployments and management
  • Experience with enterprise Wi-Fi deployments
