Provided expert technical leadership for the development of electro-optical instruments for DigitalGlobe’s imaging satellites. Working with other engineers and departments, this person will translate business requirements into instrument requirements. This leader will perform trade studies, develop alternatives, help write RFPs, and evaluate contractor proposals to ensure solid designs that will provide the required performance within cost and schedule constraints. During program execution, this person will lead the DigitalGlobe instrument team through all aspects of insight and oversight into the contractor’s development activities including design, manufacturing, test, and launch.

  • Lead the development of instrument requirements
  • Review contractor design implementation and requirements verification program to ensure instruments will meet DigitalGlobe specifications
  • Direct/Perform independent analyses to verify contractor performance predictions
  • Direct/Perform analyses as needed to support internal system and mission trades
  • Prepare and present briefings at major internal/customer design reviews
  • Provide significant support to the Satellite Operations group regarding commissioning activities
  • Provide expert knowledge to Satellite Operations group for on-orbit troubleshooting activities
  • Interact directly with Senior Leadership including the CTO.

Required

  • BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Science, Physics, or a related field
  • 10+ years in systems engineering, optics and/or opto-mechanical design and analysis.
  • Strong practical understanding of the production, assembly, and alignment limitations of real optics and optical system
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a security clearance

Desired

  • Proficiency with Zemax or other optical design software.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, IDL, ENVI or other high-level interactive processing environment.
  • Knowledge of optics and coating design and specification, optical sensitivity analyses, and development of alignment plans.
  • Experience with mounting of optical space hardware including flexures, optic bonding, and athermalization
  • Familiarity with some of the following: structural dynamics, control systems, line-of-sight jitter, composites and low CTE materials, outgassing
