Guild is one of Denver’s fastest growing startups – increasing economic mobility for working adults in America and providing education and support to help every student survive and thrive in the economy of tomorrow. Our education benefits platform helps employers offer education as a benefit to their employees, and our network of nonprofit universities and education institutions helps provide every Guild student with the right academic pathway to advance their education and career. In order to achieve our mission to serve 1000s more students and accelerate our growth, we recently raised a $21M Series B round with top tier investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Social Capital, Harrison Metal, and Cowboy Ventures.

As Guild’s Security Engineer, you’ll work with employees like Kevin, Stafford, and Sarah to build out Guild’s information security program and help to develop a security culture that will keep Guild’s information and data secure while also being engaging and fun for everyone. As an early employee on the team, you will have the ability to make a large impact on how we think about security, help to develop best practices, and collaborate with other teams to ensure we have appropriate controls in place to protect sensitive data and information. And, you’ll have the opportunity to use the latest tools and techniques in security engineering to help you do so.

A day in our open, collaborative workspace might look like:

  • Improving and evolving Guild’s information security program and ensuring security policies are up-to-date with current industry and legal standards
  • Collaborating with sales and client implementation teams to review security contract obligations and participating in client security review processes
  • Working directly with IT and engineering teams suggesting improvements to tighten up network, application and cloud infrastructure security
  • Developing and implementing tools or writing scripts to assist in detection, prevention and analysis of security threats
  • Managing third-party penetration testing and assisting engineers with on-going security scanning

In this role, you’ll expand your expertise by:

  • Becoming an expert in cloud security and gaining deeper knowledge of AWS environments
  • Helping Guild scale our security systems and protocols as we continue to grow
  • Developing technical skills such as working with new and modern security tools, frameworks and products
  • Receiving feedback through our learning-focused, twice annual Structured Growth Conversations

You’ll know if you’re successful by:

  • Ensuring Guild’s employees are trained and up to speed on the information security program and policies
  • Helping the Engineering team establish and build best practices in cloud and application security
  • Continually auditing internal systems to ensure compliance with our security requirements
  • Preparing Guild’s internal systems and procedures for future ISO 27001 or SOC 2 compliance
  • Bringing enthusiasm, positivity and security expertise to the role in a fast-paced, fun, and collaborative environment

You’ll join a team:

  • From diverse backgrounds – from traditional higher education, to athletic coaches, to politicians, to mental health professionals (and more!)
  • Of learners & problem-solvers dedicated to our dual mission of changing education in America while building a successful, high-growth company
  • Committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that you’d support every day

What you’ll add to Guild – as an individual and part of the broader team:

  • 3+ years security engineering experience, systems administration and/or a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, cyber security or related field
  • CISSP, CISM or CISA is a bonus!
  • Strong understanding of security principles, policies and industry best practices, including knowledge of standards such as SOC 2, PCI, ISO, NIST, OWASP as well as familiarity with legal security regulations
  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure, cloud security and familiarity with DevOps, preferably with AWS and tools like ansible, puppet or chef
  • High level experience with scripting languages such as python, bash or ruby
  • Experience with incident management and response and disaster recovery
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to talk about technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Passion for higher education and our mission – Guild is pioneering a new path for education as a benefit in a complicated and regulated space focused on employee and student data privacy
  • Exceptional organizational skills, flexibility, multitasking abilities, and a high level of attention-to-detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in a startup or similar environment where there is frequent change and a need to demonstrate and act with a sense of urgency
  • Something else? Wonderful, we’re curious to learn more about you!
