Principal Engineer

 

Job Description

 

Engineering at Nordstrom involves applying scientific, mathematical and social principles to design, build, and maintain scalable and sustainable technology products, devices, systems and solutions. These technology products and solutions elevate customer experiences while meeting the needs of the business. 

 

A Principal Engineer acts as a technology leader in all aspects of their daily job. This includes being responsible for architecture, best practices and operational excellence for multiple teams across Nordstrom as well as being the subject matter expert for a specific vertical.  Principal Engineers are extremely proficient and self-starting individual contributors that produces code as a core part of their practice as well as leads code reviews for their span of influence. In addition to technical expertise, they are members of the core leadership team, who mentor other engineers and understand the greater business context as it relates to their areas of operation. This role functions in a leadership capacity comparable to that of a Manager role. 

 

This Principal Engineer on the Credit Tech team will support the cardholder experience as part of a customer journey as well as the business of card services. 

 

A day in the life…

  • Understands SaaS & Packaged software integration into enterprise systems; with skills to determine and overcome risks using solution design 
  • Understands event-driven and microservice architectures and demonstrates ability to discuss tradeoffs given specific use cases 
  • Understands the power of platforms as a unification model, reducing cognitive load on teams and helping to drive individuals and teams to solve business problems rather than focusing on infrastructure
  • Impacts and guides quality, security, and privacy-centric engineering best practices across the cardholder experience in the enterprise 
  • Demonstrates ability to incorporate industry best practices across engineering teams 
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize performance issues as well as optimizations and solutions for any application, product, or service
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize, diagnose and fix security defects and issues in any application or service
  • Understands cost trade-offs between technology and business and provides the best technology solution as it relates to telemetry

 

You own this if you have…

  • 10+ years professional software development/architectu experience with a diverse tech stack consisting of .NETCore/C# and Java as well as open source technologies on an AWS platform
  • Prior experience with some of the following:  SaaS integration, Oracle Financials Cloud implementation, Kafka Eventing, Kubernetes, AWS (EC2, ECS, EKS), Dynamo DB
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS, Engineering  
  • Knowledgeable in deploying to and monitoring applications in AWS or other cloud infrastructure
  • Prior experience publishing, deploying, monitoring, and troubleshooting code throughout a CI/CD microservices-based distributed application deployment pipeline
  • Prior experience mentoring software engineers and making others better through code reviews, documentation and technical guidance

Hourly and salary pay ranges specific to Colorado are listed below, which is provided in compliance with Colorado law.  Nordstrom continues to remain competitive with pay and benefits in all markets.

 

Hourly

Minimum - $12.55/hr

Maximum - $46.10/hr

 

Salary (Non-Exempt and Exempt)

Minimum - $30,200/annual

Maximum - $289,200/annual
