Principal Engineer - Spacecraft Command and Data Handling Team Manager
The Ball Command & Data Handling (C&DH) group is a systems engineering team focused on procurement of spacecraft electronics hardware. As the brain of the spacecraft, C&DH is responsible for command acceptance and execution, telemetry acquisition, system timekeeping, data storage, and interfacing to other subsystems. Ball C&DH team members are project/systems/electrical/computer/software engineers who define the requirements, develop the architecture, implement the design, and test the system from end to end.
This leadership position is for a highly experienced engineer or manager who is both a people leader and a technical project leader.
What You'll Do:

  • This position is 30% functional management, 50% project management and 20% technical.
  • Oversee a team of approximately one dozen other C&DH engineers, including hiring, performance reviews, training, and discipline.
  • Assign and delegate program responsibilities to individual contributors.
  • Coordinate with senior leadership on how to retain the brightest and best engineers.
  • Understand C&DH product lines and how they map to customer needs.
  • Craft the strategy on how to meet future mission opportunities including technology roadmap development.
  • Become the primary point of contact for new programs and proposals under early development, estimating rough order of magnitude cost and schedules.
  • Work daily with the larger C&DH team on subcontractor procurements.
  • Establish strong vendor relationships.
  • Prepare and manage hardware definition and interfaces.
  • Extensive technical writing (proposal development, contractual elements, procedural definitions, specifications, interfaces, analysis support and description documents).
  • Prepare and give presentations to peers, management, and customers.
  • Take ownership and responsibility for the success of Ball space vehicles!
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You'll Need:

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 12 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • 6 or more years direct experience in spacecraft electronics design and/or test.
  • A strong hardware background.
  • Experience in subcontract management.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary teamwork environment.
  • Previous earned value management experience preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience preferred.
  • A current, active Top Secret/SCI security clearance preferred.


Full-Time On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site full-time. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.


A current DoD clearance and/or SCI access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position, however applicant must be willing and eligible for submission within 60-90 days after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access. Compensation & Benefits:

  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $150,000 - $189,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
