As the in-house electrical design expert, support the management and execution of satellite systems engineering activities for DigitalGlobe’s commercial imaging satellites, with immediate focus on the WorldView Legion satellites now in development. Guide electrical and data management satellite system, subsystem and component development, ensuring the designs will meet all performance, reliability, and life-cycle requirements. For future satellite developments, perform architectural and detailed design trade studies, develop alternatives, help write RFPs, and evaluate contractor proposals to ensure solid electronics architectures and data processing designs to provide the required performance within cost and schedule constraints. Will work with other DigitalGlobe management, Space Systems experts, Satellite Operations engineers, and contractors to accomplish his/her goals.

This critical position requires design and life cycle support experience in depth across all of the electrical systems of a spacecraft. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to perform detailed mathematical analysis from the system level to individual circuits, on a day to day basis. This individual will work with and provide technical guidance and leadership to both in-house engineers as well as lead engineers working for contractors and their subcontractors. This level of engineering leadership requires an immediate command of electrical systems design, production, test, and life cycle support.

  • Perform trade studies comparing a variety architectures, implementations, functional allocations, and solution technologies, in support of satellite requirements development for DigitalGlobe Space Systems management
  • Oversee and guide contractors in the design and implementation of all aspects of satellite electronics and data processing, handling and communication system, subsystem and component development, including: 
    • general electrical architecture and design, including review of electronics issues that arise during development to ensure that contractors have investigated, resolved and documented them appropriately;
    • interface compatibility;
    • radiation tolerance;
    • EMI/EMC;
    • parts selection and qualification processes;
    • electronics test verification methodology and documentation to ensure satellite will meet DigitalGlobe specifications.
  • Perform independent circuit analyses to verify contractor performance predictions
  • Prepare and present briefings in support of technical interchange meetings and major internal/customer design reviews
  • Recommend specific command and data handling (C&DH) implementation schemes
  • Provide expert knowledge to Satellite Operations group regarding satellite electrical subsystems
  • Develop electrical system budgets and performance analyses
  • Prepare and present briefings and design reviews for internal and external customers

Basic Requirements:

  • At least 15 years of experience in the following general disciplines, with at least 10 years specifically in satellite or space hardware manufacturing including:
    • analog and digital electrical design
    • electrical box (unit) and electrical subsystem and system testing
    • architecture and detailed design of command and data handling, power and communication systems, including hardware-software interfaces and interactions and the nuances of part selection;
    • requirements development;
    • system budgeting and performance analyses.
  • Detailed design experience in the algorithms, software, FPGA design, and redundancy management used in modern spacecraft, including algorithms used for image compression, error detection and correction, encryption, authentication, and data coding.   Ability to select, develop, and apply algorithms.
  • Ability to apply numerical methods and analysis techniques. 
  • A detailed working knowledge of software defined radios and DSP algorithms.  
  • Experience performing trade studies comparing a variety implementations, functional allocations, and solution technologies will be required. 
  • COMSEC and INFOSEC practices, development, and implementation
  • Ability to perform signal integrity analysis using various methodologies
  • A growth-oriented, proactive, bulldog approach to all activities in which this position is involved
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently distill complex problems to their essential elements using a variety of analysis tools that this individual will develop or adapt from in-house tools
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate recommendations to upper management
  • US Citizenship
  • Government security clearance at the Top Secret or higher level; or the ability to get such a clearance
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree or experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with algorithms used for image compression
  • Written thousands of lines of C or equivalent, MATLAB or equivalent, and VHDL or equivalent
  • Designed all electrical aspects of multiple spacecraft boxes
  • Performed cradle to grave electrical engineering support on more than one satellite
  • Performed anomaly analysis and resolution many, many times
  • Written large blocks of numerical, semi-numerical, and DSP code / algorithms
  • Experience with low earth orbit satellites, especially visible imagers
  • Experience performing technical oversight of electronics contractors
  • Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree or experience; advanced education may be substituted for 2-3 years of experience.
