Payload Engineering Deputy
Ball Aerospace’s Payload Engineering business unit is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to assist the Director in all functions of the department. You will represent Payload Engineering in executive level reviews for both new business and execution.
What You’ll Do:
- Represent Payload Engineering in the broader engineering organization staff and board meetings.
- Partner with the business unit directors in the identification and resolution of program execution issues.
- Identify the needs of the business unit directors and coordinate across the engineering department to address the needs.
- Provide mentorship to developing payload engineering staff.
- Assist with audit and assessment of payload program performance and make recommendations for risk mitigation strategies and corrective action.
- Work with Payload leads and Office of Chief Engineer to define best practices for payload program execution and lead the roll-out of new tools and updated work instructions.
- Lead the Payload Engineering infrastructure team including functional management of approximately 3 (three) employees.
- Participate in development of technology roadmaps and advocate for Internal Research and Development (IR&D) investments with the business units.
- Coordinate sharing of information on capabilities across the organization.
- Work closely with Supply Chain to develop and maintain supplier partnership relations for key payload subsystems and components.
- Work closely and assist in coordination of Payload Engineering Optics, Detectors, Test, and Cryogenics for existing and strategic payload architectures.
- Develop a succession plan for self, and leadership roles within the organization.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
What You'll Need:
- BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 15 or more years of related experience.
- Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Two years of related experience may be substituted for each year of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
- Proven technical and leadership experience, with ability to work with diverse teams across the company.
- Proven ability in program execution leadership across the entirety of the life-cycle gated milestones (LCGM).
- Ability to develop relationships with key customer, program, and engineering personnel from government and academia.
- Proposal writing experience; awareness of system-level issues and their impacts on system architectures and payload design to cost strategy.
- Extensive experience with program execution tools and processes, such as change control, schedule development and management strategy, earned value management systems, basis of estimate and cost estimating, and risk and opportunity management.
- Excellent communication skills including strong presentation and writing skills.
- Current TS/SCI or DOD TS security clearance preferred.

- Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or clean room, outdoors or remote research environment
- May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required
- May access other facilities in various weather conditions
- Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
A current DoD clearance and/or SCI access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position, however applicant must be willing and eligible for submission within 60-90 days after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access. Compensation & Benefits:
- HIRING SALARY RANGE: $171,000 - $235,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
